  • Gen 3 Intercooler

I'm currently looking for a gen 3, doing as much research as possible but still have some questions.

So I gather that the 3.0TD on the gen 3 was available with and without a top mounted intercooler. Just wondered if there was a preference in terms of reliability? Am I right in thinking the intercooler was only on the later gen 3s? They seem less common too?

Intercooler will only be efficient when driving along. It wont do a thing when staionary and at idle. It will however give you a little improvement in mpg . No real difference in reliability, the intercooler just makes it harder to get at certain engine items unless removed first.

That's good news then, thanks for the info!
The only other question I have is how the 2.7 petrol compares to the 3.0td in terms of off road & towing ability?
Obviously MPG and performance aren't my primary concern but if the 2.7 is as torquey as the diesel it might open up my buying options a little bit more!

HAD!(past tense).... A 2.7 goes like excrement off a chrome plated digging Instrument. Nice bit of kit but economy is bad on short runs . on long runs it's about the same as a 3l if you do not have a lead foot.
