  • Surf surfing, Surf STOPS!

KZN130 3L - driving up a hill after a slightly difficult start from cold.

Turbo made a 'wooshing' noise, which went, followed by a clatter.

Engine cut out and all warning lights illuminated, engaged N and freewheeled to a park.

Engine then re-started and l babied it a couple miles home. Did not feel very powerful and on tick-over, loud knock is heard.

Engine now starts easily, no warning lights, loud knock heard.

So - is my baby dead?

What would your fault finding order be and does the forum have an explanation for what has happened, likely bits needed to check/repair/replace?

As ever, trusting to your professional opinions here.

    Many thanks in advance.

Could you record the noise with the engine idling and revving slightly and post it on here?

Here is a video - should be viewable shortly.

      http://youtu.be/gIwvCDDndqY

Engine starts easily and seems to run as normal barring the scrap metal sound.

Checked the oil level...... dry! Took about 2 litres+ and dip stick was covered in gluey black gunk. Topped off before running again & strangely it was much quieter!

Have had a few long runs of late and not got around to checking levels - will be an expensive lesson if this has been caused by my lack of regular maintenance! Annoyingly, no indication of low oil pressure or warning lights at the dashboard.

Any thoughts as to where I should go next?

Top end rattle .Not a good sign at all.First thing I would be doing is dropping the engine oil and oil filter and checking the oil and filter for signs of bearing debris/cam shim debris. If all is ok I would flush the engine with a good engine flush drain and check for debris again . Then fill with engine oil and a clean oil filter.Sounds like a severe lack of oil changes and poor maintenance.

Dont bother looking for cam shim debris, the engine is in need of a full strip and rebuild, sorry for being the bearer of bad news.

Ahhhh - this is the sort of thing I wanted to know.

Whether or not it is worth spending to rebuild an engine, or should I just get rid and purchase a replacement?

Estimations on costings for a rebuild Gents?

Ian, sadly your last question is like asking an mot'er if your car is likely to pass, without him seeing it

If it was me, id buy another motor, stick that in and rebuild your original, over time

My oil warning light doesnt work either, i try to check my oil weekly but i do it more 'when i remeber' which is probably bi weekly

The turbo sound will be lack of oil

Trouble with fitting a second hand engine is you wont know what condition its in until you have fitted it and run it up. You could end up with an engine thats more knackered than your original engine. Unless of course you can see it running before you purchase it.If you do go down this route make sure you remove the intake pipe from the compressor housing of the turbo and give the turbine shaft a good wiggle.Anymore than half a mm of end float and you had just as well buy a new turbo whilst your at it.

                  Thanks for the thoughts guys,

Very tempted to just buy a replacement vehicle and then address the engine issue at my leisure.

The cost question was more for an idea of minimum upwards - I really have no concept of the hours required to strip out, diagnose then reassemble and fit....... appreciate that parts then go on top of that....... but it is the job time I am trying to establish.

Annoyingly, the beast does a fine job at work, all the silly little things had just been sorted and it was making me a very happy Surfer.

All and any thoughts very welcome Gents!

I would estimate anywhere around £1000 upwards for an engine strip and rebuild depending on whats found on initial inspection, a crank regrind and rebore can be time consuming and costly expect an estimated 2 week turn around. Speak to stevo.
