  • Stuck in turkey! Blown head? Help!

    Hi

Currently in Turkey and heading for an expensive pre-paid ferry to Cyprus in 2 days, where will be for the next 3 months.

3L KZN130. A little trouble starting this morning, it needed the fuel filter primed and pumped. I suspected the Spill Control Valve or a problem with the injectors. Got it started and she drove fine. Stopped for fuel and she started fine. Stopped for lunch, checked the rad (normal procedure on a long drive), it was a little low (again, not unusual on long drives) and had the same problem again. A little pumping and she started and ran fine.

About 40 miles down the road, on fairly flat driving, I watched the temp gauge creep up to about 104 degrees and stay there, just about to pull over as this was fairly unusually when the top popped off the expansion bottle.

Stopped, checked the rad, empty(ish). Filled it up. Went to start and just heard a dreaded clunk. Poked about and checked fuses, etc. Tried it again, the same. Thought the starter motor might be jammed and so whacked it with the Maglite. Hey presto! It turned over and started, but was lumpy. Cleared and she drove fine.

Got about 5 miles down the road into the next town and the temp started to rise again. Stopped and checked the rad, which was empty. Black residue around the rad cap opening and some oily shit in the expansion bottle. Decided to fill up the rad once more and try and find a hotel. On starting, which was troublesome again, masses of white smoke which did eventually clear. Drove half a mile down the road and found a hotel with Wifi.

I'm guessing the clunk when trying to start was because one of the pistons was full of water and I now suspect either the head or the head gasket. Just from what I've described can someone confirm how bad it is?

I'd probably head, gaskets rarely go on these without cracking the heads

Agree with YD.It's very rare to find just gasket go.If your having the head done then it will be an ideat to get the belts and water pump done aswell while its stripped down

Just done the cam belt about 5000 miles ago. Carrying a spare water pump as the bearing in the one currently in there had a tiny bit of play, so I suspected it would go sometime soon, that was about 18,000 miles ago. I think its still ok.

I would change it then to be on the safe side then while its stripped down.Last thing you want is to be a few miles down the road and the w/pump suddenly go especially as there is play in the shaft

              Hi,
my knowledge of Turkey is limited to Istanbul, and even then, inebriating drinks had been consumed...
you need a new head. The rad shouldn't need topping up after a long journey, unless you have a leak, the lost coolant must be going somewhere...

              Cheers

Still on the Istanbul booze I reckon! Thanks for all your help, currently trying to find a car transporter to get us to the ferry we're supposed to be on!

That's it, then you can get it done in Cyprus with no rush.
Hope it all goes well, all the best.

                              Hi
The question is what caused the first cracked head? First time I cracked a 1KZ-T head was a clogged radiator from mud plugging up north. Second time was when I was doing 120kph and a a stray bolt gauged a hole in the base of my radiator and dumped all the coolant over the road. Cracked both POS aluminium heads.

As tashtego said, the coolant has to be going somewhere. Either there's a hole in the rad or in the cooling channels in the head. My vehicle was stuck in Zimbabwe with a bust head but luckily my mechanic found a replacement engine locally and cobbled something together.
