  • Cooling system

The overheating warning light came on yesterday when my wife was driving to work. RAC was called out and turns out the radiator was empty. Rad was refilled and she drove the car to work today no probs apart from she said the heater wasn't working.
Happened to mention it to my mechanic and he said that the coolant needs to be bled through and there are certain bleed points on the engine. He also said that if this isn't done, it could damage the engine.
Has anyone heard of this before and is it ok for my wife to drive the car home (about 20 miles) ?
As I say the car is no longer over heating bit no hot coming from heater.

    Thanks.

Hey that's really kind of you Robert but I had a day off yesterday and spent it sorting the Surf. All sweet.

I'll give you a wave if we ever pass each other.

            Tony.

              Well done.Good news

Consider fitting an aftermarket temp gauge. Search for info.

Turns out the head gasket is cracked
Haven't got a price from garage yet but does anyone have a ball park figure of what it will cost to get a new one fitted?
For a P reg, it might be time to say goodbye to the old girl

Its more likely to the head rather than simply the gasket. It,ll easily cost you 1200 to 1300 in a garage. 800-900 DIY with a decent head from a reputable source.

Head gasket needs replacing. Garage reckons labour = 10 hrs £450 + parts, total approx £1000.00

Has the garage checked the head visually and pressure tested it?
I think the whole forum will be pretty surprised if its only a gasket you need...

If i understand this correctly and have my sums sorted thats 550 for a head gasket ? plus bolts etc.

A complete KZN 185 head including all bits needed to change is 810 including VAT from Roughtrax.

So Im going to assume that the 550 is actually for a complete head from a lower cost source. Up to you but I think Id be dubious of the cheaper head
