    Update!

    It lives
I finished getting it back together today, it took a while as things needed a bit of fettling along the way.

    So
New AMC head, bolts, gasket, etc.
    New timing belt.
    New thermostat.
    New silicone heater hose.
New silicone rocker cover breather pipe. ( split at the bottom)
New coolant once I've drained out "start up" water.
New oil and filter once I've drained "start up" oil.

It all went together well with no snapped bolts or stripped threads! My mate was very impressed with the build quality of an 18 year old truck.

Went to start it after checking everything at least twice! Primed it, cracked off two of the injectors to get some fuel flowing and it started after about 30 seconds cranking!
It sounds a bit more tappy than before but maybe it'll quite down after a while and maybe it's me listening to hard...

One pain in the arse though was the supposed full gasket set supplied from Roughtrax.
No exhaust manifold to turbo gasket!
No radiator top hose casting to side of head gasket!
No heater take off pipe to head and block gaskets!
    No leak off pipe gaskets!
Not good, and all needed for head a swap.
I hope it's something they can sort out in the future as it's just asking for trouble re-using old gaskets.
Still the service is fast and hopefully the head will last a long time.

I'm off the watch Moto GP now.

Not sure who will be towing who!
Congrats on the successful head swap.

Can we start a book on who breaks down?

I'll go for the Alfa won't make the channel tunnel and the Excel will catch fire in northern France....

          Well we made it!
No break downs. The lotus kept lagging behind and we had to keep waiting for him....
The Alfa needed it's "lightened" bonnet duck taping down.
The Surf? Just used a bit of oil on the 135kmph thrash back to the ferry.
We made it with 15 minutes to spare.
I saw a nice black 2nd gen in the campsite but he wasn't on the forum.
A good weekend really except the ####ing rain!

My head looked just like yours, but wasn't too bad to change considering a first do.

it would have been prudent to have also changed the water pump at this stage too.

Hmmm, the pump is good with no leaks so I left it alone as I prefer a known Toyota one to a cheap pattern part.
I have a digital temp gauge now so keep an eagle eye on the coolant tempurature.
Saw a max of 99° hammering back from LeMans late for the ferry in high heat up hill fully loaded.
Normally it runs a about 86.

Thats a good investment your after market temp gauge, that should keep you in the picture so to speak. Good job !

I got it from eBay for about £22, it's not the usual 50mm type but much smaller about 35mm diameter with a silver alloy case & a red display. It fits really well on the dash right up against the A piller, the wire will go down the gap so it can't be seen.

Here are some belated pics of the digital temp gauge and sender unit in my Surf.
Sorry about the size of the photo's.
It usually sits at about 84° on the flat and rises only on long hills.
Well worth the money and effort to fit after I spent £#### on a new head!

Nice. Used to have a wee 250 Guzzi twin (rebadged Benelli 2C) - wish I still had it. Then a Monza. Always fancied a S3 but now getting shockingly expensive. Anyway. Best let everyone get back to Toyotas eh?
