Hub seals on KZN185 - common problem?

I'm looking at my kid sisters Hilux service history before tackling a number of jobs for her and
I notice that over the years she has been charged for replacing rear hub seals and oil contaminated brake shoes as well as regular Diff oil top ups... These appear to be an annual service item which doesnt sound right to me. Its been a year since she last had it serviced and has covered around 5000 miles since then so it will be interesting to see if there is a problem with the seals again this year... Are these a known problem, or is she unlucky with this car or is the usual service garage being less than honest? I mean there are two services two months apart for the same thing with less than 800 miles between... I would have expected they would have done the second one free as the first had not been done properly?

Hub seals

Not a regular service item and not a straightforward job either (needs a large press to press the bearings off, assuming you're referring to the shaft oil-seals).
Unless there's an underlying bearing issue causing these to fail repeatedly (which the garage should have reported / fixed anyway), then they're swinging the lead by the sounds of it.
Ask then to explain how they do the job, if it doesn't involve pressing bearings off & replacing ABS sensor rings, then they're having you on.

Thanks Jon, yes i suspect theres an element of "up-selling" going on. I would like to confront these guys but my Sis is not too keen as its a small community etc etc.
I need to get the drums off this weekend and see whats going on...

I have also seen service history relating to tyres which alarms me, same garage and they fitted a full set of Coopers and then replaced the front tyres before an MOT just 14 months and 8500 miles later as they were "worn to legal limit" ... I would have thought that was about impossible even on a heavy truck like these. I suspect the tracking may have been out and scrubbed the tyres, but they have serviced the car for years before that so surely they should have noticed if tracking was that far out...

Sounds like they've just been replacing the outer seals. If the bearings are worn the seals will start to leak again in no time.

Ok so no sign of leak from hub seals BUT there was so much grease (not even coppaslip, just normal grease) on the studs and hub flange, i could see that it had been flung out to the outer surfacescof the drum, not enough to contaminate the brake shoes but enough to make the brake dust like a paste. Im guessing that this could have been seen as "leakage" previously... .?

All clean and dry now, ready for the MOT
