Transmission cooler

With the fan on it would it need to be front facing or could it just be positioned anywhere in the engine bay?

Also what would be used to switch the fan on? or would you just wire it up to a "going up a big hill" button in the cab?

That looks a nice bit of kit!
I should think you can get a thermostat that will switch the fan on and off maybe even an adjustable one.

A bit overkill really.
You don't need a fan unless you want to mount the cooler where there won't be any airflow through it.

Well, I was thinking it may save the hassle of finding somewhere to front mount it with good airflow. Although I'm not sure if it would cool well under a hot bonnet.

I fitted one in the bashplate on a 2nd gen........

I will have a look when the new truck arrives, Its a standard Gen3 so may be different as yours looks pretty modified.

I've bought this transmission cooler, and I believe I have two options....

1. Go tranny > oil cooler > radiator > tranny. This would mean the transmission fluid would still be heated by the radiator in cold weather.

2. Go tranny > oil cooler > tranny. So bypassing the radiator, this would be to avoid the possibility of the bottom of the rad splitting and leading to coolant and transmission fluid mixing leading to the "pink milkshake transmission failure" I've read about.


Which option have you gone for/do you recommend?

I went with a bigger slimmer one so I could mount it to the existing radiator to get pull through from the fan. Surely there cant be a too big when it comes to keeping the tranny cool?!

The 'box won't shift properly if the ATF isn't warm enough.

Make sure you plumb it before the stock cooler. (Option 1 in your list)

That oil cooler is about double the size of the ones we use on our Gen 3s which tow 2 tonnes of horses and box on a regular basis. It should fit neatly behind the front bumper. You can improve the airflow by removing one or more of the 'blanking' sections in the silver plastic bumper by the air intakes if you wish. Go gearbox - cooler - rediator - gearbox as Vince said.

Gearbox cooler rad, or gearbox rad cooler, either is in fact OK with regard to heat balance. The advantage however of gearbox cooler rad, is that in the unlikely event of overcooling the ATF, the rad will put some heat back in, but if your cooler is sensibly sized even that is probably a moot point.

I mate of mine fitted it today, he decided against using the plastic ties to fix it to the radiator, he is making a metal bracket instead.

He said "plastic cable ties have their place, but I wouldn't go to war with them"

I can't imagine I will notice any difference but it will be peace of mind and it's nice to have a capable truck that's ready to do anything I ask of it.
