  • Possible Diff Issue 3.0td Gen 2

Hey guys, not been on for ages as my truck was off the road for last summer then put back on for the winter and nothing really has been wrong with it.

However as always we come back to the forum to ask for help!!!

Tonight I was doing my 3 weekly trip to get my kids from their mothers some 50 miles away and it did the motorway journey no problems at all, however as we got into Derby my truck started to make clunking noises when going round corners or roundabouts, if it was a tight one then it also clunked quite badly and even shook the hole thing.

I have locking wheel hubs on the front so I don't think it is the front drive shafts and it still pulls away so I am thinking this is the diff that's having a major one.

Thing is and this is where I could do with some opinions.
I have been thinking about selling the old girl and changing for an MPV due to my family getting larger as I adopt three kids.
    so question is :-
1 Do I cut my losses and scrap her ?
    2. Do I sell her as she is?
    3. Do I get her home and repair her and then sell her?

She has had a RoughTrax head put on about 20k ago, 2" body lift and 2" suspension lift is on 16" wheels and 30cm tyres and apart from the diff there isn't a lot wrong with her that a Little TLC wouldn't put right.

If I Sell her what should I be letting her go for ? again if I scrap her what is she worth?

    Opinions would be appreciated.

    Thanks

    Darren

Check the ball joints upper and lower. The lower one is a Dodder to change upper one a little harder but both are in expensive

Would that cause the entire truck to jump though when going round a corner?

With the above there is definitely no reason to scrap it. At worst...break it.

But it would be worth looking into the cost of repair. Sorry I can't help diagnose your issue...but DON'T scrap it or give it away.

Sounds like a 4wd problem to me.
You say you have locking hubs, but are they actually unlocked?
Is the 4wd button in the off position?

              Hey thanks for the comments.
As far as I know the hubs are unlocked and the 4x4 button is in the 2wd position.

Not being able to see the truck as its 50miles away is somewhat annoying to say the least. However I will be going to see it tomorrow and will check all the above.

Having said all that what does happens if the rear diff goes?

                You don't drive anywhere

The Surf is normally in rear wheel drive so if the rear diff fails you aren't going any where.

the way round it is to remove rear prop shaft, engage 4 wheel drive, lock front hubs, this will then send all power to the front diff and give you a means to drive home gently.

Going from Vince's train of thought and your description it does sound like drive line wind up.

Morning and thanks for the imputs at the momet.

Well had to take the kids home last night and borrowed the partners car so went to have a look and move it to a free carpark before i got a Ticket.

Both Front hubs were unlocked and the 4x4 indicator wasnt on and if i pressed the button it did come on.

I put it into 4x4 a few times and backed up in a straight line a few times and there were a few clunks and bangs then it stopped so i carried on backing up in straight lines then putting it into first and driving it forward 4x4 off of course.
Then time to move the thing and even though i thought i had maybe unstuck some of the stuck transmission allas it was not to be.

Driving it about 100 yards it was banging and clunking like a goodun and it all sounded like it was at the back end of the truck, yes it might be noise being transfered through the prop shaft.

SO i finally got it to a car park after being very carefull, but even in a straight line it was clunking through the transmission, not as bad as it is round corners but there were a few clunks and bangs.

its ove 50 miles away in a carpark so will have to wait now till the weekend (fingers crossed its still there) and i will go remove the drive shaft and see if that makes any diffrence.

Unless anyone has any other ideas or think its dangerous to move it in this state.

                  Thanks

Unfortunatly its all been in the Dark so nt had a chance to get under her.

I am getting it recoverd at weekend as long as she is still there, if not then its a cry to the Insurance Company.

Once she is home then will have a good look at the various parts and boxes and joints and things like that to accertain how serious it is.

                        Morning

Well she was recovered home over the weekend, but didnt get a chance to have a look at her, however !!!

When moving her out of the car park and then onto my drive, i took the chance to get the recovery man to listen to the noise and see what it could be. He was of the opinion that its is all comming from the Rear axel, even asked if there was any oil in the rear diff. the rear axel isnt wet at all so i dont know.

When she was recovered home the recovery man left the handbrake on and i didnt notice, as soon as i tried to move her the rear end ground like its was a serious gear box problem and wouldnt move (handbrake i know) but then i released the handbrake she wouldnt move at all. Put it into 4x4 and managed to move it off the road and onto my Drive way with a lot of rear end grumbling and complaining.

So having said all that i have come to the conclusion that the rear axel needs to be replaced.

i cannot see that changing the axel will be that much an issue but as i am planning on selling her anyway is it worth it?

Definitely worth replacing, a mobile truck is worth more

Make sure you get a matching rear axle ratio, make a note of the code on the VIN plate.
