  • Squealing noise. HELP!! It's driving me insane!

    Hi guys,
My 95 surf has this awful squealing noise coming from the front of the truck. At first it was only when pulling away, then I noticed on a road trip at 100kmh steady it was doing it as well. Lately it seems like it's doing it more and more.
It's not very loud, but just one of those noises that eats into you.
All 3 belts are new and have settled in and been adjusted up. I'm confident that this isn't the noise I'm hearing.

    Anyone got any ideas?

    Cheers guys

it could be the break pad low indicators on the disks. jack it and spin the wheels and see if you get the same noise

Does the noise happen when the vehicle is stationary or only when moving?
Would you say it's in line with engine speed or vehicle speed?

Not the brake pads, different sort of squeal noise.. More like rubber constantly rubbing together..

It happens when I rev it in neutral as well as when driving. I'd say the pitch changes with engine speed.

        Hope this helps...

Well that rather eliminates everything behind the torque converter (he says assuming it's auto).

Have you checked all the pullys, including the state of the harmonic balencer/crank pully?

other rubbery bits that can break....engine mounts or gearbox mounts?
          loose hoses rubbing?

what about perished inlet hoses leaking presurised air between turbo and inlet manifold? that could concievebly make a squeek...I'm running out of ideas now, you can tell can't you

Having said that, might be worth just checking the turbo shaft play...for good measure.

Have you checked the bearings in the aircon clutch and tensioner ?

Just removed the aircon belt completely and ran it, still makes the noise so cant be that
                  I was so excited!

Checked all the other obvious pulleys and things that are spinning with a long screw driver and none seem to making that whining squealing noise. Its so faint and I have to wedge the gas pedal down at the perfect rpm to hear it when its in park. Any other Ideas?

Did you check the Turbo play?

How many miles has your truck got on it?

Nope, havent checked that yet. Whats the best way to do that?
                      Its done 225,000km.

From in the cab you can hear it. It sounds like its coming from directly behind the LH passenger footwell. Outside the truck with it running its too noisy to hear.

LH is wrong side for turbo...but for refernce just pop the ellbow of the induction side of the turbo and give the shaft a little wobble with your finger (not when it's running obviously), 6 thou (1/8th of a mm) is ok, I had 1mm+ on mine and that's not ok...have a look at the housing for any marks the impeller has made, that would be very bad. Should be measured with a dial guage but who has those kicking around at home!

Have you checked the crank shaft pulley it has a rubber compound to stop vibration this often goes.

Hmm, couldn't really get my screwdriver onto it to listen while is was running. Ill take all the belts off today and remove it to see.

Are they any other things that move near the LH foot well as it really sounds like its coming from right behind it when you're in the cab

Could it be the starter staying engaged? That's in the right area....
