Starter problems

Can anyone point me in the right direction with starting issues i am having which are progressively getting worse.

i turn key in ignition, theres a click but the starter does not turn, I try again and it fires up. sometimes i have to try several times before it turns over, sometimes it goes first time. The problem is worsening. I am pretty sure the batteries are ok, theres plenty of charge and very positive crank when it does go, I hear a click every time i presume from the stater solenoid in the engine bay. Do i need a new starter motor? are they easy enough to change? or is it likely to be something else?

You need these, but as its a secret as to whether you have a 2.4 a 3.0l or even a petrol jobbie, I'm not sure how easy it will be. 3.0l is dead easy, 2.4 I'm told is a bit harder.

Just to explain what's going on... your starter motor has a 'contact switch' built on the side (in fact, a solenoid - like the separate one with a big rubber button you sometimes had to press to start your Mini). It has two contacts inside made of copper and they're about the size and shape of a couple of "Rennies". Every time you operate the starter, they connect with a copper ring and produce an electrical arc; over the years this eventually wears them away. They start at about 4mm thick and end up wafer thin - that's when the clicking starts - the solenoid can't pull the copper ring down far enough to connect them. Replacements are readily and cheaply available on the Bay of Plenty, often complete with illustrated fitting instructions. Fiddly job - especially in this weather - but easy and you'll only have to do it once.
