I have been stripping stuff off so I can change my injectors and noticed that the egr butterfly is open, is it supposed to be? also there seems to be quite a lot of oily gloop in the intake manifold around the butterfly should I be concerned or is it quite normal?

    Cheers Dave

EGR Butterfly should be open when engine is not running. Oil will be from blowby and normal, unless there's pools of it.

No its not swimming but It worried me. I'm a building surveyor who has turned his back on the company Audi and is enjoying being different in running two old Toyota's (94 surf and 97 mk3 pick up) but diy mechanics are part of the learning curve (will I ever get my hands clean again?) so i'm a bit green and with limited knowledge. tools but am enjoying it all the same.

Ps I'm not totaly new to 4x4s I have had 2 surfs a mk1 pickup. 2 mk 3 pickups, 2 mk2 pick ups and 3 landcruisers. just never been very keen with the spanners, but after getting shafted by the local garage on numerous occasions I have decided to have a go, these forums are an excellent resource and make me feel much more confident to have a go!

      cheers
