Hi all,
Wondering if one or two of the more knowledgable members could offer some clues whats going on with my poor Surf.
Took my 3rd gen, 1996 TD auto for it's MOT yesterday, and it failed.
The bloke said it failed on the front wish bone links being 'insecure' and that it failed the emissions test.
The links were replaced by me last year, so i can only assume the nuts need tightening up a little, so that should be easy to sort out, but he reckons he couldn't do the emissions test, cos when he revved the engine to high RPM's 'a strange engine knock was heard and a puff of smoke came out the pipe'.
He said he didn't want to carry on with the test in case he damaged the engine.
How high do they have to get the RPMs to for the emissions test?! I tried to get the same effect, so at home i revved up and didn't see any smoke, once i got to near the red line at around 4.5k RPMs, the puff of smoke happened.
I never red line my Surf..not even close. I rarely go over 3.5k rpms, so i'm a bit alarmed the MOT bloke pushed an old engine that hard..could he have broken something in the engine by revving so hard?
What could be causing the puff of smoke at high RPMs? I use about 40% new veg oil in the Surf, have done for last couple of years, so don't think it could be the veg oil that's causing the problem, but to be honest, i don't know one way or the other.
I read on here about the EGR mod, so took the pipe off and sealed it with a bolt and cable ties, but it still did the smoke thing at about 4.5k RPMs (greyish colour smoke).
Any ideas or advice welcomed.
Cheers all.
