  • IC vs standard

Considering a diesel Surf to replace my stolen 4.0L V8 petrol Surf.

How much different/better is the driving experience of the inter-cooled turbo diesel versus the standard turbo? Thinking around the 1996-2000 era.

Here in NZ there is a decent price premium for the IC so there must be something in it?

    Cheers

Thanks. But that is still an internet answer!

What I'm ooking for is the real world of experience of somebody who has driven both and can describe the difference - regardless of what the numbers say in theory!

Surely someone out there has owned or at least driven both types???

I can't help as I haven't driven the IC one, but aren't you going to cry everytime you drive it as it hasn't got a thumping V8 under the bonnet? I'm not sure I could go back to a diesel after that!
        If I like it, Bushwhacker doesn't. :-)

Well yeah there is that! Which is why I'm trying to get my head around either switching driving style entirely to the best performing turbo diesel Surf I can find.... or going for a later model Range Rover V8.

From a Kiwi to a Kiwi, grab the intercooled version. My one goes like stink!

Honestly the intercooler does help and adds a little better economy too (if you dont drive crazy like I do)
I give mine a good kick in the guts at the lights when I feel like it or get bored and it will either leave everything else behind it or if its slightly wet it gets left behind as im sitting still just doing wheel spins

Rumor is that the intercooled ones also have a lower risk of cracking the head due to cooler intake temps and cooler under bonnet temps, and the fact that mine is about to tick over 300,000kms and still on the original head and still runs like a new one with no problems and the engine oil stays clear for over 1000kms after each change has to be testament to what a good 1k should be like

In short, over here it might cost a little more for an intercooled one but the economy and maintenance savings more than make up for it in the long run

edit: I have driven both although the non intercooled one was a second gen vs my third, but the extra 56nm of torque really shows, leaves the other one for dead

              Hi Kiwi

Ok, thanks that sounds encouraging. I'm going to try one at the weekend and see how good it feels. And decide whether to go for one or give up the idea and get a V8 Rangie instead (similar money)!

              Cheers

Better handling in the surf and better economy than the v8 rangie, especially if you cough switch the speedo cough

Fuel consumption isn't an issue cos I do such a small mileage. Hence not concerned by a V8 petrol vs diesel.

                  Main factors are:

                  1. Boot space (Surf better)
                  2. Driving experience (Range Rover much better surely???)
                  3. Reliability (Surf better)

                  So head says buy Surf.
But heart says try something different and take a small risk.

                  Still undecided!

                    Decision made and executed.

Shiny 'new' 2001 intercooled turbo-diesel SSR-G sitting in my garage. Only 160k km and looks and feels like new. Ideal G-spec with wheel under, electric rear window, transmission cooler and dual battery winter pack. Perfect.

                    Goes like stink too!

Thanks. Christened it on the west coast sand dunes yesterday. It went very well, far more capable than my petrol v8 managed - the extra low down torque is v impressive!
