  • Engine vibration and intermittent knocks (thread contains amusing onomatopoeia)

My 3.0 3rd Gen is starting to get pretty rough, I think its suffering a multitude of problems and I'm looking for some opinions on my diagnosis and/or a shoulder to cry on....

Its suffered the cold start miss fueling problem that I have read about on here for a wee while but its never been more than a few little blips while I've started the car on the drive and then left it idling while go back to pick up the keys/tools/dog/child I've forgotten to load. Now after a weekend of heavy motorway use the miss fueling was so bad I had to stick it in neutral and keep the idle up while in traffic as as soon as the rev's dropped it was dieing... Not so good... The fuel filter is pretty recent, fuel hoses/pipes new at the time of the filter and its not long completed a course of redex.

There are now also a lot of intermittent noises coming from the engine, on the way to work today I got a massive "RRRRRRRRRRRRRRR" from the engine bay (it sounded like and was as loud as the engine running at 4000rpm). This happened as I came over the top of a hill and took my foot off the accelerator. I guess this would be the force of engine braking rev's dropped but the truck whee'd on down the other side of the hill. I've noticed it does this slightly more quietly when coming to a stop. (I do rely on engine braking a lot).

Also I'm getting new vibration from the engine that feels like something is imbalanced and over the regular steady "burrrrrrrrrr" of the engine there is either a "pok pok pok pok" or a clattering that sounds out of sync with the rest of the engine.

To top it off I get a really bad vibration at motorways speeds that appears to be non engine related, (if I coast it still rattles my glasses off).

Oh and after a long hill decent in low 1st gear the truck started blowing blue smoke. I'm pretty certain this would be the forces of engine braking sooking all my engine oil in through my 150k piston rings and turbo seal. The smoke cleared up afterwards though so I don't think there is anything too mahoosive to worry about there.

My planned course of action is: (in no particular order)
Take the prop shafts off and check the UJ's
see if I can get my props balanced/checked
get the wheel alignment and wheel balance checked

Clean the charge air pipework as its black and gungy inside
have a peek under the rocker cover to look for gremlins

have a look at the engine mounts
surf the web while looking out the window at my poorly surf
look at new trucks on ebay
realise I'd be better fixing my own heap than splashing my pennies on someone else's.......

The loud noises and vibration have me a bit concerned, I'm blaming the engine but that's mostly because I don't really know the ins and outs of the gearbox. Do the symptoms ring any alarm bells with anyone?

After a bit of dismantling today I've discovered the charge air pipework is very heavily fouled with oil. The crank case breather might be more to blame than turbo oil seals as the engine breathes quite a bit.

Also I found I an air leak around the smaller throttle valve spindle. Does anyone know if new seals are available for this or its function? I guess it is the idle air valve as the main one springs fully closed.

there are oil deposits all under the air valve actuator so looks like it leaks on that side.

the mess that the turbo blows.

tonight I successfully stripped down the small valve without dropping any of the screws or pins into the manifold! The shaft has plastic seals that felt pretty solid, not sure if they should be softer. I found the valve spindle has maybe up to 1mm of lateral movement so the end washers and plastic spacer are not sealing against the plastic rings in the manifold housing.

I'm going to rebuild with an extra spacer to take up the slack and se if that makes any difference.

I know the 2.4s have two sizes of seals in them. One for main butterfly and the other for the small butterfly. One I have found is available but not the other. Can't remember which. The 3Ltr may have the same seals. They should have a number or size on them. There's also a steel bush inside the housing for the shafts so the alloy does not wear. If you pull the seals and get a number I can help search for them, or if the same as the 2.4 I will check them again.

        Nev.

Any good bearing factor should stock those seals if you can get the numbers or measure them.
Vibration at speed could be an out of round tyre, I had one that was "balanced" by the local tyre monkeys that I later found to be 7mm out of shape! Jack up the axle and put a pointer against the tyre then spin it slowly and you will see if it's out.
Not sure about the engine noises .

cool cheers, I'll have a look at the seals and get some measurements.

seals are 16mm outer diameter and the shaft is 8mm. number is A901231.

I was going to take a picture of the parts and the number to the toyota dealer parts desk (there next door from my work) to see if they can get the bits. They've found parts through the parts catalog for me before.

build the truck back up today and went for a spin, the engine was noticabily quieter on the first run but after stopping the engine and restarting its back to normal noise levels. Going to check if the air filters not coming loose or something.

This is what I have for the 2.4 seals.

                http://www.toyotasurf.asn.au/forum/v...hlight=venturi

There is an 8x16x7 seal listed here so may be available at a bearing supplier.
