  • Big problems

I have a big problem that causing more issues. When driving at 50 or more the whole car shudders, so severely it has caused exhaust gases to leak from my manifold somewhere and it just rattling the whole car to bits, I found a bolt missing from my alternator last week and another one loose; the whole alternator was loose and today its felt the effect, its shagged the new water pump and dumped all the coolant out in the petrol station, there is also separate play in the viscous coupling.

Anyone have any ideas as to what this is? I have been looking into it prior to this and was suspicious of the prop shaft but the bearings seem ok; there are not getting hot. Could it have lost a balancing weight? I know this has happened to people before, where should there be weights? Any other ideas?

On the prop have a look for a patch about the size of a brake pad that is a different texture or colour than the rest of the shaft.

Is it definately when driving at 50 or does it shake to bits standing still and revved ?

(sounds to me like something is seriously wrong with your engine if it's shaking itself to pieces)

edit: Check the engine mounts and the gearbox rubber mounts on the crossmember.

Are the yokes aligned on the rear prop?

Not tried standing still I will try that, Its not the engine its the whole car, I feel it in the steering as well. It does it at lower speeds but not as much.

I have not looked properly at the props yet, I will do tomorrow; after driving the joints didn't feel hot so I won't take them down unless I can't find anything else.

I will check the box tomorrow, Not long had the engine back in and the mouts were sound then. the fan is not broken but there is play. So I hope it won't damage the new pump.

I am located in Wibsey on the outskirts of Bradford.

                  Its a manual.

the gearbox mounts look visually ok.

Not had it running again yet as I have taken the pump off but here is what I found so far.

The pump has been making contact with the housing but still unsure why it dumped all the water but I am picking a new one up soon.

I have two of these on the rear prop; are they the weights or mounts where the weights are supposed to be?

Yep they look like the balance weights.

Do a search on 'dual mass flywheel'

                    Rob.

Looks like you will need to replace the water pump housing if it's anything more than slight wear. Maybe the impeller has come loose, or the shaft has slipped back from the bearings.

                        Nev.

It doesn't appear to have ground away at the housing so I might get away with it, no damage on the impeller ether. Fitting the new pump now will see how it goes.

Being a 4runner its got a solid flywheel.

Pump done, been for a run and its all good. In current traffic I can't go past 40 so I will make some more accurate notes of the symptoms later.

I had the back wheels off the ground in second and the prop is spinning smooth; it doesn't vibrate or wobble. I was getting an up and down wobble in the axle but that could just be because only one wheel was spinning. There was some movement in the transfer box but not much.

I didn't want to rev it hard as it was only on the jack and didn't have the stands to use.

Check your tyres are not out of round.
I had a fairly bad vibration at 40mph+ and found one of the rear tyres was out of shape.
Jack it up then spin the wheel with a pointer on the tread at the outer edges and middle.
Mine was only 7 mm out but I swapped it for the spare and it's now totally smooth.
