  • Just when I thought it was running sweet

I did a 5 hour trip yesterday and the surf is very poorly. It started making a squealing noise to start with which sounded like a pinhole in the exhaust. It got louder and turned to a screeching noise. Unfortunately the dashcam could pick the noise up but it was in line with the turbo; as in it increased pitch through the rev range and didn't make the noise when revving in neutral or on the overrun.

I then discovered that exhaust gases are escaping in the engine bay. Not only that but at 1500rpm-2000rpm its a bit lumpy and it kicks out blue smoke.

    See video.

Also my oil leak has got worse, anyone know where its from?

I've not watched your video, but you're describing symptoms of a gubbed turbo.
Do you know that, with a 50 character limit, it's

I am just wondering if the gases are escaping from the turbo.
It still boots fine up to .8 bar. Also where I have my boot gauge T'd into off the bottom of that little filter, I realised the vacuum pipe had come off. Although I didn't notice any difference when i connected it back up.

I found the manifold to turbo gasket has gone so thats where its blowing, I am going to put the strange turbo noise down to that until I sort it out.

Still doesn't explain the blue smoke at 1500rpm-2000rpm though.

Anyone got any tips for removing the turbo? I have done it before but its such a pain in the arse I can't help but this there is an easier way.

Remove the driver's side front wheel and the inner arch inspection plate for 'easier' access.
