  • Excessive grey smoke, hard starting, abrupt cut-off

I'm having a hard time with my KZN185 transplant. I thought it may have been immobilizer related, but now I'm really not sure. My issue is thus:

As I'm cranking the engine over, the grey smoke starts to gradually increase until about 10 seconds in when it fires up in a huge cloud of grey smoke. It runs and responds to throttle input for about 2-3 seconds max. EVERY time. Then it abruptly shuts off. Ive tried bleeding the injectors, and tested the glow plugs for functionality, I'm not sure what I may be doing wrong or overlooking. I know that my fuel temp sensor was broken off, so it isnt plugged in now, but I can't imagine that being the cause.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Ever had this problem before? Any input is greatly appreciated!

*edit: Also, the key, sensor, and amplifier for the immobilizer was included with the ecu, but the immoblizer module itself was purchased seperately. Not sure if that makes a difference, but I'm trying to include any info that may help clarify things. Thanks!

    Injector pump timing?

Thanks for the quick reply, I have checked the alignment of the pulley indexes and they all seem spot on. I'm relatively new to diesel engines, but I've been wrenching on gassers for some time now. Is the IP timing more in-depth than just pulley alignment?

Not really, if the timing marks on all the pullies are aligned then it's more likely to be an electrical issue.

Not heard of an immobilised ECU for the diesels, can you tell me the serial number on the sticker? I'll have a look for some info for you.

Also, the ECU should have a pin-out for the immobiliser light, which should go out if the key is being 'seen' by the ECU.

This set-up is from a 97 Land cruiser Prado. The ECU # is 89661-60540. The database on ToyoDIY.com has it listed as Electronic control diesel with Immobilizer.

First thing I would do is hook up a 12v bulb to the security pin-out at the ECU to see if it's reading the key.

OK, going to give that a try. Many thanks!

Well upon inspecting my ecu, I believe I have found my problem. I took the cover panels off of the ecu and found a transistor/etc. on the board was fried at T591. Not sure what Tried to trace it back to one of the ecu pins, but I'm not very familiar with circuit boards. So at this point, I think I'll be looking for a new ecu unfortunately.
