  • diff, CV's, or what?

ok, i'll try to describe it....

in 4wd when turning there's a clonk which i can also feel quite severely through the steering and under my feet.

also when you're spinning the front wheel in the air, as it comes down and takes some load, it sounds like i've got auto hubs slipping... (but i don't have auto hubs)... this is why i thought it could be a ADD/diff problem

it's also a bit tricky to select 4wd (but this was in the carpark so i could bump it up a ramp)... (it was fine on mud at the weekend)

i have been getting whiffs of diff oil while driving, but when i had a good sniff around there was nothing and i can't see any leaks. so i put this down to me being paranoid.

anyway... the idea with the most votes gets looked at first!

p.s. the gaiters are all intact.

no rush though cos i'm skint and it drives fine in 2wd!

Might be worth draining the diff oil to:

        a) see if there's any in there, and
        b) see if any chunks of metal come out (if not, stick it back in or replace with new stuff).

there's definately diff oil in there cos it's now leaking onto the patio!

anyone got a diagram so i can identify parts?
it's leaking from the part between the inner cv and the diff o/s there's a lot of movement so i'm guessing it's fubar... just wanna know how it all goes before i pull it apart!

            The same problem !!

            Hello Slugman,

Did you get any further with this problem, as I seem to have the a similar one. Seems the seal where the near side shaft enters the front diff is shagged, any idea where to get a replacement or is it Toyota only ??

            Thanks in anticipation.

Front Diff / Half Shaft Seals

                Hello Diezel Weazel,

Thanks for the reply, I've tried both Roughtrax and Milners and neither seem to be able to supply this part. The local Toyota garage has come up with a couple of suggestions, and is prepared to order both items in to see which is the correct part (or both might be correct from alternative suppliers). One is £23 + vat and the other £14 + vat.

I'll report back when I know more.

                Bye for now.

                Wack
