Thank you for the offer but unfortunately I no longer require the gas test. It has started sneezing a rather large cloud of steam from the exhaust when I start it up.

Next step will be to get the head off. see what has gone and why it is burning oil.

Looking at the bleak side how much am I likely to get for it as spares or repairs? I have had a look but there is not much to compare it to. Its an L reg on 125k.

Also how much demand is there for parts? I know I would get more if I was to break it but I don't want to keep It for ages.

I would prefer to keep it but I want to consider my options instead of just throwing money at it.

However that will involve stripping out most of the parts and it is a waiting game

IMHO if the rest of the truck is in good nick I would bite the bullet and get it repaired, once the head is done you know it is going to be good for a fair amount of time.

The engine; its hard to say. It really plumes blue smoke out when its cold. As in I can smoke out both my neighbours gardens after 5 running it 5 min from stone cold.

It does have a duff glow plug, but it only smokes really bad when its running lumpy. However it does seem to burn oil all the time; it smells like a bus with the back window down.

Also if I cane it; It smokes like a smouldering wood stove. Although its all a mist of soot its not oil. Unless its a mix but I don't think so. My Surf is actually a 4Runner so no EGR to blame.

Wings are totally rotten inside the arches. some non-critical rust on the bottom of the doors. bumpers are perfect however, the front one has been replaced at some point as its red underneath where I have scuffed it.

Can I expect a flood of emails if I was to put it as breaking on eBay or not? I found myself looking regularly on ebay for new surfs being listed.

I was looking at this actually but I am just worried about it being on the magic 100k mark. I don't fancy the same problem in another 3 months. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Toyota-4-R...#ht_1410wt_984

The general consensus is the imports(surfs not 4runners) are normally in better nick for a comparable age, probably due to use of a non corrosive grit used to treat the roads during the winter months in it's native land.

The oil burning on cold may be due to oil grade/quality,however it is more probably valve stem seals.Or maybe rings

The black smoke is useful in stopping tail gaiters give it a lead foot and they soon back off

Front wings again probably due to road salt used in the UK

IMHO I would pull the head off and then decide.....Autumn/Winter/Spring project.

Sounds reasonable. Not too fussy with the condition really its more the mechanics that I care about. I don't want to be in the same situation.

I changed the oil with some reasonably good stuff. Its smoked since it overheated so I am feeling the rings.

I know that. Night time I have the off-road reverse spots which give the same effect

That was the plan but I am considering plans for the worst now. I am not hanging about with it, head should be off sometime next week.

Upon first inspection; its not gone well.
              Technical diagnosis: ####ed

It has cracked between all the valves and between a water jacket as well.

The bores look good however so that is something.
