  • Is a cambelt change needed?

    Hi,

I've just bought a Oct 93 3.0 litre surf from an auction in Southampton with a very low 29k miles on the clock.

Do you think that I need to replace the cambelt?

The mileage looks genuine from the condition (especially under the bonnet). I was also told by dealer at the auction that if the cambelt was to go on the 3.0 litre then it wouldn't cost much to repair compared to if the same happened on the 2.4 litre. Not being technical, I can't remember exactly why. Is this true, and how much damage would it cause/cost on the 3.0?

    thanks,

    Duncan

p.s. probably first post of many! Picking up the vehicle tomorrow.

If it was me I'd change it as the 3.0 is a doddle to change and will only take less than an hour. It's worth it for the peace of mind.

    Cheers

Both the 2.4 and 3.0 ltr engines are classed as interference engines, which means that they will both have major damage if the cambelt snaps, so the dealer is talking utter B*ll*cks.

        Duncan,
I assume that the auction was at Motorway.
While on the docks yesterday, awaiting C & E clearance for my newly arrived HULK OF A BABY (green is best'est) i had a look around Motorway's Surfs.
All the one's i saw had written on there sticker the mileage ( in KMs ) & mileage not confirmed unless a little tick in the adjacent box, never saw any with the little tick

So your best bet, change the timing belt plus all the other things mentioned on the forum, to do after you have your baby.

ACCEPT THE MILEAGE ON THE SPEEDO AT YOUR PERIL

as someone has allready said changing the belt on a 3 ltr is a very simple job.a friend of mine who is a mechanic did mine and it took him 15 minutes!
even with a genuine belt it only cost £50.if the belt goes you're looking at a big bill so don't risk it!
