Just read some threads about hard starting as my surf didn't start very well today when hot, it turned over for quite a while before starting. It's always sarted well untill now. I have noticed the filler cap hissing very loudly when I fill the tank ( it's always done this though) is the tank meant to hold pressure? or is this hissing a vacuum from a blocked vent?

Which filler cap?
ETA
To clarify, my fuel filler cap usually sits on the tyre while I'm filling up, and definitely doesn't hiss. Do you mean AFTER you've filled up?Last edited by Wolfracer; 24 March 2012, 00:40."B.A." Baracus: "Talk to me, talk sense so I can talk back. Most likely you have a blocked vent filter. To change it may mean removal of the fuel tank. If you have the original fuel cap installed then (I believe) it is a vented one. If so, take it off and give it a real good clean. If not, then drill a small hole through the cap to vent it. Having your little fuel cap door closed prevents water ingress through the cap after this.

How low have you been running the tank? you may be sucking all kinds of crap out from the bottom of the tank. And I agree with other posts, the cap may be blocked, try giving it a clean with a solvent (or petrol) and let it dry, then try it again
