Emissions failed M.O.T

Help! My surf is a 3.0 94 model, i have just taken it for its first m.o.t and it is black smoking, just on full throttle, FAILED M.O.T. I have put a full can of redex in...how long does this take to work.? emission count was 3.1, i was told it has to be under 3.? 1 thing i have noticed it revs well into the red, in nuetral,is this right.?

Redex doesnt do very much unless you use it long-term. Easiest way to lower the emissions, if you haven't done it very recently, is to change the engine oil and all the filters.

I've heard that taking the air filter out for the MOT also does the trick.

As i am so new on here, i dont know if i am answering in the correct way.?
I have bought air, fuel, oil and oil filter for changing Sunday. Hope this does the trick.? I also have wear in 1 of the joints on the front end, i dont know what the joint is called, but if i take a picture of it, can i put it on here for identifying.?

My emissions were 0.6 last time - new head and no EGR. Mind you they wer 0.6 before I changed the head.

One good way to lower the emissions before a test is to give it a good thrash before going to the MOT station. Too many people take their car direct from home to the MOT station and emissions are always greater when the engine is cold.

If you wanna use additives to try and control emissions

Millers Diesel Plus was given the thumbs up by the venerable grease monkeys in this group, I beleive the entire contents were emptied directly into a new fuel filter, instead of using diesel to fill it. Then the vehicle was driven around for a while as neat millers ran through everything downstream of the filter.

Another would be to get some Bio diesel/SVO+Dino mix. Might help.

Of course a tune-up from a decent diesel specialist might be just as good.

how about a "texas tune up"?? something to do with parafin, cold water and revving lots...


when we ran mini's we used to just turn the mixture right down low so it only just ran and then back up when we'd passed... if you forget to turn it back, it will burn out valves when you're half way to see your bird in chester and she won't appreciate you appearing at 4am covered in oil!

Last year I tested 9.99 and wont go into how I passed on the retest

Last week I tested 4.52 with a bar of 3.0 , that was with 2 gallons of paraffin in about 2 gallons of diesel. It was well hot too. I know its my 2LT pump coz the injectors are clean and have new washers and gaskets in.

What temp did the 3.1 read at? The hottest they could get mine was 89 degrees. He must have floored it 30+ times, it was painful to listen to.

Lucky's right, mine was on the limit when being MOT'd and the guy let me take it up the road, advised me to give it a bit of welly in 2nd, came back and it was spot on when he put the meter back on.

Jim I have 2LT's and I've never had one fail an MOT for smoke. Sump temperature is usually 130-140°C

I always chuck Redex Diesel in hold it in second up a long hill and hold it near the redline. Works for me I had low emissions when mine was tested.
