    Hidee Surfers......

I have a KZN130 3L 1995 Surf5. Love it to bits but I have a metallic clanking sound from the front left side and front right side . Have been to the really good friendly mechanic down the road. He is baffled and says I have to much money to spend . Sounds like the heat deflectors behind the discs. I am lost for ideas . If I drive on bumpy roads it gets worse. I can't drive with the windows down as it drives me insane . Please help. Any advice or pictures would help. Thanks a lot

I would check all big things that are bolted on including the following:

        Front bumper
        Shock absorbers
        Steering Stabilizer
        Sump Guard
Aircon Radiator (you may have broken one of the rubber mounts.
Exhaust front pipe - may be a broken mounting
        transfer box mounting
        Gearbox mounting
        Engine Mounting
        Air cleaner box

Probably quite a few other things worth checking but you get the idea.

These kinds of noise, especially if they get worse tend to indicate something loose but they are hard to find.

Have the Surf up on a jack, check the wheel bearings for play, spin the wheels and see if you can replicate the noise.

        Cheers and good luck

          Howdee Surfers.......

Thanks for the advice on the snow chains. I didn't know I had any attached to my tank tracks. That must be the rattle. And now to the serious advice. Thanks very much. My kind mechanic is going to let me lift the Beast up on one of his hydraulic ramps to look for all the bits listed and more. Cheers again.

under the suspension wishbone is an upside down rubber dome shaped bumper thingy about the size of a yoghrt pot.
theres one on each side. mine are loose and i think they are the cause of an annoying noise when the surface is 'non motorway'. i would tighten mine but the bolts are rusty.
