  • replaced turbo oil feed and return pipe...and...

Hi all, i need a bit of advice from fellow kzn 3.0 td owners.

had an oil leak for the banjo bolt of the turbo oil pipe ..so bought new pipe, took off manifold, and water pipes, turbo and turbo elbow.

replaced pipe for shiney new item ..and refitted turbo (note turbo shaft had some play in it but not much)

gaskets all fine.. all fitted up and painted.

was running ok before i did this .. a wee bit of blue ish smoke on starting when really cold.. but now .. its refusing to idle.. will only idle badly if i urn her over on full throttle and shes kicking out pulses of back smoke for the exhaust ...

I did suspect the turbo may be worn, but seems odd to just suddenly go from fine to knackered... so ..anyone any idea?

as far as i know all pipes a re back inthe right place, all breathers reconnected.. only two electtical connection i moved are at the back of the hard pipe...

so, why wont she run ?

    Si

I would change the banjo union and banjo gasket.I did these on my old 3.0 when i did the turbo. The copper banjo gasket may look ok but may well be knackered
Best place to get them is from Toyota dealer.I can get the part numbers for you or just tell the dealer the chasis number etc and they will get the part numbers from there

Were these the VSVs at back of engine? If it was, then did you connect vacuum hoses back on correctly?

Sounds a bit like it is starving for air because the small throttle butterfly is closed, but just guessing, as you do not explain things very well.

            solved..

blockage on the intake side of the turbo...

once that was cleared it all runs.

all the gaskets are new any ways ....

just had a minor water leak from the turbo water pipe ..fixed now ..

however under hard throttle i now have black smoke... so i guess the turbo's days are numbered....

            cheers

i left all the vacuum pipes connected, I just unbolted the lot from the hard pipe.... double checked this morning and all is well.

it was starving for air, but as a result of a blocked turbo ....

Black smoke is overfueling. Is the turbo making funny noises? Oil leak from turbo seals would be blue smoke.

left it a few days and done a few miles....

                      And all appears well.

the blockage was actually a rag i had left in the turbo intake elbow when rebuilding her (i was cold tired and hungry and just didnt see it)

the black smoke i mentioned earlier hasnt reoccured despite some pretty serious driving ...and there are no unwanted noises or odd things coming from turbo ..

she starts easier too and theres no more oil leak

so..rag error not withstanding... i am a happy bunny ..!

No thanks, I realised that the error was mine all on my own.

However your post does rather imply something, and thus lead me to certain conclusions as your Social skills.

My post was the product of exasperation, yours however is indicative of a wish for confrontation. Whilst mine was spur of the moment, yours was distinctly premeditated.

On that basis, it would seem sir I am the lesser of two evils.

Would you have preferred it if the 38 people had left you useless replies, like the ones on the other forums?

Yep, it implies that I think you are socially impatient and mechanically incompetent. My social skills are not in question, your's are.

I agree, I thought about what I was going to write, before I did it; that's not confrontational, it's reasoned debate. You, on the other hand, have merely confirmed your impatience with another knee-jerk answer.

I disagree. I would say, Sir, that I am the lesser of the two evils as (as you confirmed yourself) I calmly thought through my responses and did not act on a whim.
