  • Glow plug stuck

Hi can anybody help i have taken the surf into the garage to have my glow plugs changed, he as told me 3 have been fitted yet the fourth will not come out it is just spinning when he try's to remove it. Also is it a case of the head having to come off to re-coil the hole??, thanks in advance surf 3ltr 1999

    Can you explain just spinning?
Has the plug come undone but the electrode won't pull through the head?

Someone here may advise if you can simply pull it out or if there is a danger of dropping the electrode into the cylinder

From what the garage was saying he thinks the threads have gone in the head, or the plug as snapped and the threads are stuck in the head he reckons i should leave it as is because it is starting no problems.

I had this trouble on a BMW 330 and left it alone! Still in there now after 2 years. I agree with the garage, if it is starting, leave it.

        Alternative??? Head off I'm afraid!

Watch out if they do that, material can drop into the darkness! Then it's head off.

Yes think i am going to leave it in there as it's starting fine 1st crank in the morning. But since getting the surf back it seems lacking in power like it's starving of fuel, you put your foot to the floor when turning and it would spin no problem at all, now you put your to the floor and it very slowly pulls away until the turbo kicks in at 2000rpm then it's like it's good old self. Must say this as got me baffled he changed glow plugs and also the contacts in the starter as they where well worn, almost seems like you have the hand-brake on?? Do you think there is something he as forgot to plug back in like a sensor??

I agree with the others about leaving it till it becomes a problem.

My day to day car is a Merc E class just because its better on fuel.
The engine in these are prone to snapping glowplugs and I have just buggered one up trying to change it.

Yesterday I tried to make a puller to get it out but the bolt snapped leaving a bit of thread.
Tomorrow I will be making a slide hammer to knock the little bugger out.

The suref still starts and goes first turn of the key.

Surf all sorted, left the glow plug in as she starts 1st time as for power was sucking in air from turbo pipe, refitted job done
