  • 1KZTE vs 1KZT

OK, this'll challenge those that reaaaally know their surf/4runner trivia...

I have a '96 4 runner (UK, 3.0td) with a 1KZT engine, at least according to a Toyota dealer. It seems that most surfs are listed as having a 1KZTE engine. My question is; what's the difference ?

Points will be awarded for the first person to point out that it's the E...

I need to know as there may be an engine re-build in my future :-(

I think it is pretty much the same as the difference between a 2LT and 2LTE engine. i.e. the 1KZTE (fitted to surfs) is an engine where the fuel injection pump is controlled by the ECU to alter injection timing depending on load. The 1KZT (fitted to UK 4runners) uses mechanically controlled fuel injection. adjusted by mechanical means withing the fuel pumps (counterweights I think probably.

I think there are a few external differences in positioning of some things (I think the oil dipstick is on the oposite side) and the throttle housing is different (not sure on that one).

Personally I'd stick with a 1KZT when rebuilding, parts will be available from UK toyota dealers wheras the 1KZTE was not fitted to 4Runners and is therfore not so easy to come by (not sure whether it was the 1KZTE or 1KZT fitted to UK Landcruiser Colorados or something else).

    Cheers

Thanks for the info. I'm planning to get stevo's opinion (when he gets back from his hols) and assume/hope that he knows the difference between these engine types. It sounds like fitting a 1KZTE would require some significant fuel system modification, which i'd prefer not to do. Getting a recon 1KZT might be hard, if there aren't many about, so hopefully sorting out the 1KZT that is in it will work. It sounds as if all the internals (big end, pistons/rings etc will be the same). Since mine has had a new head in the recent past (judged only by the fact that it is much shiny-er than the rest of the engine) i'm hoping that it won't need a head as well.

Before i get stevo in, i need to have the turbo that i had replaced checked, while it is still under 'warranty'. There's a slim chance that all of the problems come back to this (variable blue smoke, low oil pressure) but it looks unlikely. Or has anyone had a 'new' (turbotechnics) turbo fitted that turned out to be a dud ? The garage that did it are less than inspiring, so i'm wondering if i'd believe anything that they told me...And of course if it is dud i can see turbotechnics blaming me or the grease monkeys...

1KZT were fitted to Landcruiser & 4 Runners from 93 to 96 and the 1KZTE to Land Cruisers from 96 to 98. 1KZTE as Andy says is the electronic bit, the KZTE had ECD (Electronic Diesel Control). So same as the 2LT & 2LTE one has slightly less to go wrong with more of your basic mechanical stuff, the other a bit more electronics.

1KZT with TDE. (Too beer or not too beer...)

          Hello surf fans!

Well, since I joined to this great virtual book, I can't find what is this:
Mine 4Runner (3.0TD - KZN130L) have Turbo diesel with ECD.

I read above only KZTE have ECD.
          Well... i'm confused.

I saw on www.framn.org and input the 4Runner VIN and the result was:
Made in 1994-04, SR5 type, WG Body (4runner), Catalog code 671550 (what's this?), KZN130-8003577 frame and KZN130L-GKMSXW model.
(Yes, I learn from Toyota how to be nuts fast with plenty of info about....

Anybody would explain this peculiar subject?
          Thanks!
