  • Couple of mysteries

Firstly, One of the sheets of paper I have with the car when I bought it says that it is a KZN185. I believed this.
Today I looked at the plaque in the engine bay and it says KZN130 on it. Should I ignore the piece of paper?

Secondly, While hunting for a new starter motor I noticed a few have stuff about a code on them with lots of numbers then a dash and then 4 more numbers. I cant find this on my one, do I have to actually scrub it clean and get in there with a torch or am i being a tool?

Thirdly, my near side front CV joint boot seems to be unattached at the bit where it goes onto the drive shaft thing coming from the engine area. Would it be an idea to get hold of a new one and rip the old stuff out? It's sprayed grease and gunge all over everything under there and makes some noise on full lock.

Fourthly, My document with the car says it was built in June '94. This is fine but EVERYTHING I look at on ebay seems to be up to '93 or from '95 to whenever. By looking at pics of everyone else's and what they've been saying, I've worked out its a 2nd gen so does this mean that I can use bits that say '95-'x or should I look more at 'x-'93 stuff for example.

Finally, how many bolts are there in the starter motor in this car? i can only see 1 and have a feeling that's not enough.

    All wisdom massively appreciated

KZN185 is the 3rd Gen Surf, SFAIK, so if you have a 94 (drop down tailgate?) then it's definitely a KZN130. If so, the seller may have misrepresented it to you, grounds for complaint depending on how much it cost you. So you need bits that are for a 2nd Gen on that basis. 2nd Gen runs from about 92 to late 95. Just go by the model designation.

As regards the CV boot, as long as it's not split, fix it on with a large zip tie after pumping more grease in there. The noise on full lock is your steering bump stops. Wack some grease on them to stop the noise.

No idea about the starter but if it's not working it may just be the contacts. If so, try a contact kit first (from Roughtrax). And yes, there is more than one bolt but apparently they are a bitch to get out. Glad I never needed to do one on mine.

Thanks for identifying that for me.
Paid £1950 for it, 4 new tyres and mostly working just fine so I'm not too worried about that.

On the other side, the boot nearest the engine seems to sit inside some housing, whereas the outer bit is held on with effectively a metal ziptie...

No worries about that connections, found a reasonable unit on ebay now
