  • Drive sharft/trans problem

I was driving home last night and when I stopped in traffic there was an almightly rattle/clattering sound from under the truck. Lots of white/grey smoke and a stench of burning grease/oil. I managed to get her home and am now wondering what has gone wrong.

The front drive shaft can be turned by hand even when in park gear. It used to not do this I think before the incident

It can be driven (to a garage) but was wondering if anyone else has has this failure before I get the wallet out. It passed the MOT the day before and then broke down, I am a little upset about this

What caused the smoke, leaking fluid?
    Where was it coming from?

This is normal, if you couldn't turn it you have problems!

The smoke is coming out of the exhaust pipe! When I press the gas pedal the rattle occurs and the smoke. I started it up today and the smoke is now black. It was white/grey when it happened. I suspected the transmission as the noise sounds and feels like it is from underneath the vehicle, and the engine seems to be running ok except the smoke. Was set to change the glow plugs before all this as it was getting harder to start. The 4wd gear stick now vibrates really badly even when not selected.
Any ideas? I am lost on this one .....

              I was just in 2wd.

The turbo, had not thought of that one. Is it hard to change? Never even had a good look for it, where is it? Does that explain the terrible noise from under the my feet when I drive it? I might have to call in a favour from a mechanic friend as it might be beyond me and my rubbish socket set. Will it be Ok to drive it or would it need a tow?

Thanks for the comments on this, I was pretty gutted when this happened as I had just done the oil change, fuel filter, MOT and tax and rear window motor, timing belt, starter motor contacts. It was however quite dramatic as I joined the Friday night traffic jam blowing out clouds of foul black smoke as opposed to my normal pleasant chip shop fire aroma
