Squeal when engine under load.

Hi, My 3ld td have developed an intermittent squeal when you accelerate but dissapears as soon as you take your foot off the accelerator. It sometimes does it from cold, sometimes only after engine has been running for a couple of minutes. it sound more like a bearing type whine than a belt type screech if that helps? any suggestions gratefully appreciated.

It's most likely one of the belts if the squeal is there when accelerating but not when you lift off.

highly likely to be the alternator belt.....is it worse when you have your headlights on?

Could also be the eye valve, or the turbo.

Mine used to do that, one of the alternator belts had snapped and the remaing one could not cope. Do you suffer from flat batteries ?

Alternator and belt are fine, no problems with charging or battery life, noise seems to eminate from the torc convertor area. My hubby says changing the transmission fluid and filter may help as they appear to have never been touched! Any ideas? Anyone know where I can get a transmission filter from other than Toyota?

What method was used to check the belts?

There's no replacement filter in the transmission as such, it's more of a gauze strainer set in a steel frame. I've opened up a few transmissions in the past that have done well over 100,000 kms and the strainers have been clean, so I wouldn't worry about it.

Definitely change the fluid though especially if yours smells burnt and is dark brown.
Torque converters don't make any noise, they're bolted to the flexplate (flywheel)

I would be tempted to try blanking off the egr valve.

Mine had similar symtoms to what you are describing, so it went to Tony (this was a few years ago). We found play in the turbo bearing so we replaced that, but it didn't cure the squeal. Tony tracked it down to the egr valve, which he blanked off and removed completely, and she hasn't squealled since.

Many thanks to all for your help and suggestions. We changed all the belts a short while ago as the timing belt light had come on, the alternator belts did not look badly worn but were changed anyway. The only belt that is not there is the a/c belt as the motor siezed half way up the M5 and partial destroyed itself (the only time I needed to use it up til that point and only 2 months after I bought the Surf). I will see about checking the turbo and egr valve as mentioned, I also was planning to change the transmission fliud as it is black (never a good colour for oil). Wasn't sure about the filter as Jeeps need to have the filter changed at the same time as the tf and my previous Surf was a problem fraught 2.4 manual. I will keep you posted with any news/findings.
