  • Fuel filter, water warning thing and primer

Here goes, I've been getting a distinct diesel smell for a while, hadn't had a chance to take alook and as everything was running fine thought i could leave it alone.

I started having trouble starting it a few days ago, usually its half a crank and off it goes, its started really needing a good grind to fire up, engine is spinning fast, batteries at 90% so a bit of trawling and i think its the primer. doesn't get hard no matter how long its pumped!

I thought I would also check the drain valve as the engine bay looked a bit clean around the filter. Unscrewed a couple of turns by hand, re-did tightly but still by hand.

Only now when I prime the filter its dribbling fuel out of the valve at the bottom. Before I start buying things are there any o rings or something I could have unseated and would this on its own account for the primer losing pressure?

    So new filter and.....what?

I have to mention I need to get everything in one go when I'm in the UK in a few weeks as parts are non existent here and postage is a killer.

The filters on pretty tight and I won't have a new one for about 6 weeks, do you think its going to be ok to take the whole thing off, work on the water drain thing and then put it back on. If I had a new filter this would probably be a bit easier.

Besides the main filter O ring there's two others. One for the sensor and a very small one on the drain tap. Drain tap one is probably the culprit so get a genuine one. Part number 23344-54010.

            Thanks guys,

I've replaced the tiny o ring in the tap and done it up a bit tighter than I would haved liked to, seems to have done the trick and sorted out the cranking to start.

BTW whoever thought of flipping the filter and primer over and bolting it back on so you can unscrew the filter was a genius, I think I would have had the whole thing off and struggled by clamping it between my legs, if you can imagine!

I'm not 100% sure what the primer is there for as it doesn't look like its got a job to do until you take the fuel filter off and need to re-fill it, but it looks like it causes a fuel drain problem if you introduce air to it - from top or bottom.
