  • Economy Test

Tomorrow I am driving from Nice to Paris to deliver a motorbike.

I will not be using the expensive motorways much for a number of reasons.

I'm keen to see what mpg I'll be getting.

    1. 604 miles each way

    2. 120kg of trailer 270kg of bike one way only

    3. Mostly night driving taking it real easy.

    I'll report when I'm back.

    I'm gunna guess at 19mpg there & 24mpg back.

      Economy test!
Good idea to drive at night though, the Surf's aerodynamics are much better in the dark.

Well I have to go, so why not at night with quiet roads and cool air?

I enjoy little adventures like this, discovering lots of towns and villages instead of zipping past on the motorway.

The motorway tolls would be €71.80 each way otherwise, at the moment 10 hours of my time is not worth that....

By test all I mean is that I'll keep an eye on mileage and fill up quantities.

I like to keep tabs on the fuel consumption so I know everything is well with the engine, if I didn't check it every now & then & it was using more fuel I would never know, well maybe I would because I'd be filling up every day but you know what I mean.

              The results:

              1. Crossing alps with bike and Trailer (400kg):
              398km/247miles 40l/8.8UK Gal = 10l/100km or 28mpg

              2. A roads with bike and trailer
              529km/329m 50.3l/11.8Gal = 9.5l/100km or 28mpg

              3.A roads trailer only (130kg)
              551km/342m 52.5l/11.6G 9.5l/100 or 29.5mpg

              4. A roads trailer only
              317km/197m 31.7l/7Gal - 10l/100 or 28mpg

I was driving really gently, no motorways, short shifting and didn't even go over 60mph, cruise at 55mph.

              No oil or water consumption.

Try using www.fuelly.com to track your mileage, it makes the process very easy.

When you say you got 28-29mpg, are you using Imperial or US gallons? I'm guessing imperial being that you're in the UK?

                  yes 4.54l per UK gallon.

To convert just run your math with 3.8l? iirc

                    Excellent

                    Thats very respectable.

It amazing how many more MPG you get when you're just cruising without stop-start driving in traffic.

I can get nearly 50-80 extra miles if don't go over 60 and drive gently and sensibly. The minute you give it any sort stick it dives, but it can be done....

I am lucky as in France the A roads (well N actually) are quiet.
Sarkozy has terrified drivers with many speed cameras and 'repression' by the police so people generally drive at the speed limit which is only 90kmh 56mph on A roads.

The motorway to Paris is €75 each way - so its worth losing a day for €150.
