  • New matrix required- is head likely to be going?

    I have noticed an old post by a member who asked if a heater matrix going was likely to be an indicator of the head being on the way out; his other questions were answered, but not that one? I ask because I am thinking of buying a Gen 3 that has recently had a new matrix.

    Not generally, but worth further investigation.

    When a head has got a crack in it, the pressure in the cooling system is really high, especially if the cap is bunged up with radseal, so Rads, matrixs, hoses etc can all split under the pressure, But more often than not its just the part thats failed.

    I'd look for a rusty coolant, full expansion tank, low coolant, new rads/hoses, etc to go along with the leaking matrix before worrying to much.

      Thanks tony-I actually didn't edit the post properly, I was supposed to have added that also the rear heater pipes are apparently corroded (and I'm looking at nearly a 300 mile drive, unless that's dealt with first!), and that along with the matrix having just been done frankly makes alarm bell start

        rear heater pipes are fully exposed to all the crud the road can throw at them, so they always corrode eventually. Unless you reaaly want to keep using it, you can just cut the rubber hoses that link the feed and return pipes to the coolant system, and block them off.

          The rear heater can be bypassed easily from under the bonnet. There are two identical pipes with rubber hoses which disappear under the front bulkhead below the brake servo. Remove one of the short rubber hoses completely and then attach the other one to both pipes going to the engine - effectively making the coolant do a 'U' turn!

            i sourced some straight through pipe and shoved two bits between the rubber hoses where the branch pipes sit and jubileed them in place, 5 min job. H
