  • No reverse gear

My truck is currently in at a Toyota Dealer having the gearbox seals done. They have replaced all the leaking seals (3 + the crankshaft seal) and re-sealed the gearbox sump.

Anyway, they took it off the ramps and out for a test drive; all was OK. Then they washed it (#######s), but couldn't reverse it out of the wash bay. They say it has all forward gears and drives perfectly, but no reverse.

Their first thoughts are that there is an air-lock somewhere, they will try to shift it tomorrow. If this doesn't work; do any of you have any ideas on what it could be? There are a couple of threads on here about missing reverse, but none have solutions...

Get them to unplug the 8/9 wire transmission multi-plug (Next to the shift linkage) and see if reverse works. This will let them know if it's an ECU fault.
If no change then it's either a fluid or valve problem.

They tried the multi plug, it made no odds. They found a loose pipe, which they have re-fitted, but still no reverse.

Apparently, it will hold its own weight on a slope when in reverse, but has no drive.

      Any other suggestions?

I assume the linkage is correctly adjusted?
If it is then your reverse clutch bands have given up or need adjusting. If it holds it's on weight but no drive then I would suspect the clutch bands.
Or I suppose it could be a torque converter malfunction, but you say it drives in forward gears OK?

Yep, it drives fine in all forward gears. They are taking it to a specialist today, so hopefully it'll be fixed son. My worry is that they find something that they can say wasn't their fault and I end up having to fork out for the specialist's repairs.

Did they have to open the box to change the seals?

They would have had to unbolt some odds and ends to do the front ones. They also had the sump off and replaced another seal somewhere (not sure which one though).

No maybe NLA with no prices. but thats the full kit needing a full dismantle I'd suspect.

                              Top one at 127 743r = 2,779.29 GBP

Lower ref at 212 747r translates as an ACPP assembly - whatever that means....
