  • Viscous fan oil replacement

I did this today, just to be safe in the knowledge it would work properly.
    2nd gen 3.0

Easy job. Remove shroud to get plenty of room to work.
    [IMG][/IMG]

Undo the 4 bolts holding fan assembly on
    [IMG][/IMG]

remove fan from viscous coupling, 4 nuts.
    [IMG][/IMG]

Use an impact driver to undo the screws holding both halves of assembly.
    [IMG][/IMG]

turn both parts over and let the old oil drain out, give it all a good wipe down and then replace the oil. Assemble parts and bobs your uncle.
don't disturb the rubber seal when taking apart and cleaning.

I'd have spent a bit of time clearing the old oil with petrol, you'll not get it all out by draining it. But you're right, this has to be one of the cheapest and easiest cooling system repairs (cooling system modification if you put thicker oil in) out there.

Not much of the old oil seemed to be in there Andy, gave it time to drain and Brian topped up the new stuff.

My old 2.4 one was actually dry, all the old stuff had been thrown out. The 3.0 one had a bit more, but not much. The seals don't seem to be too brilliant on them.

Glad to hear that, it was overdue on mine then.

I did put thicker oil in it btw.

Where do you get the 'better' oil for this mod?

            Is it easily available?

              yep,

Radio control cars have em in the back axle, I think 6000cst is normal, the oz guys put a thicker 10000 in to make the fan run sooner.

I think it is the Silicone DIFF Oil that you need, that is suspension oil.

I think I read somewhere else that the viscous coupling holds 30ml of oil.

I've just ordered som 7,000 8,000 and 10,000 from here:-

I will probably use the 10,000 as it will do no harm being stiffer!

                          re

Could anyone give a detailed description of how you actually put the oil back into the hub?

Is there a fill level or summat?

Where exactly do you put the oil?

I'm gonna do this over the next few days and I don't wanna botch it up!

                          THANKS!

In this thread the Toyota bottles are marked 3000, which i assume means 3000cst. Sounds thin, but seeing as I've seen upto 100,000 CST for RC cars I don't think it makes a big difference.
