  • Does This Head Look Genuine?

Hi, I ran a search on this subject but did not really find a certain answer, so I thought posting some pics and asking the experts might help.

This head was removed from a 3.0td Gen 2 Surf, it was more econmical for me to put a built up head on rather than repair this one. I am interested now in a couple of things, firstly is this head genuine?

Also how do I clean it up, is there a degreasant you can soak it in or something?

    Cheers

Looking at your pics I'd say no it's not genuine I've never seen a proper Toyota part with rough etching part numbers on I'd say it was an aftermarket head you have there. Could be wrong mind in my opinion I'd go with no it's not.

Do you think the etching on the head would be a serial number or part number?

The number looks home made with a dremel 0398 could that be the date it was made or surfaced?

Gunk in a big trough and say good bye to a few paintbrushes.

Why do you want to clean a damaged head?

The block is fine it is only a bent valve. I have a crack in my timing pulley that I read instead of the timing mark, when I first got the truck and I snapped the camshaft and bearing covers, it was cheaper for me at the time to get a rebuilt head. Now I need to decide weither to rebuild this or sell it so someone else can strip it and rebuild it. It has been sitting in my shed for a long time but as I am moving I am losing the shed.

Looks to have some damage on it mate, maybe it's just dirt but it looks like chips and pits.

Thats why I wanted to clean it up to inspect it. I think it is just dirt but I want to be sure. Alot of what you can see in the pics is oil stained polysterene ball from the packing in the box.

Aaaaah. That would explain what looks like two massive pits between the valves on the right hand side....

The etching, as previously said, does not look factory. My best guess is that it was part number scratched on by a breaker or something, but no idea really.

don't worry about chips and digs to much, as long as you dig the metal out.

I have put these back together in the past (with owners consent and after discussion obviously) and still running great years later.
