  • Strange starting problem from cold

    Hello everybody.

My surf has developed a strange starting problem

Up to about 12 months go when starting from cold It used to growl on cold start. (loud diesel clatter) which would disapear as soon as the engine started running.

Mysteriously that disapeared and I needed longer to get the engine to start. (count 12 seconds before cranking).

Earlier this month I inadvertantly ran out of fuel (DOH!!)

From that point on it struggles to start and takes extended cranking I thought one of the plugs had gone so changed them all. (one had!)

This has made it slightly better but still takes a bit longer to start.

I've checked the glow plug circuit. from cold voltage is about 10.7v & draws about 80 amps, as the plugs heat up current drops to about 25 amps.

Apart from this starting problem the truck runs fine, no excessive smoke, no water loss etc.

Its done 126,000 miles so I wondered if the injectors are in need of refurb. The only other thing I've noticed is sometimes the engine check light does not come on when turning on the key but weather the light comes on or not it does not effect the starting.

    I'm stumped!

hmmm thats what I thought, either that or a pump or ECU issue, might try a can of Forte in the filter!

It's most likely the gauze filter on the back of the pump and/or possibly the fuel filter.
You ran the tank dry remember!

Ist step.. I would of thought of..... is to check and change fuel filter.... you will probably find it full of crap. If its further back in the tank and work has to be done there...you will have to change the filter anyway. Go here -
