  • Top end knocking

Got a knocking coming from the top end of my third gen. I`ve had the wooden spoon on it and i`m almost convinced its coming from under the rocker cover
It`s random but regular and sounds to me like there`s something loose in there or worse still just rattling round inside waiting to jam into something
Its not loud, just loud enough to be heard in the cab
There`s nothing wrong with the way its running at all, infact its running great but its beginning to worry me. Anyone got any ideas

    Worn valve shim probably.

    How old is the oil?

I`m going to try and record it but it`ll have to be a vid and i`m not sure how to go about putting it up so it`ll take a while. My only experience of shims is on the old kawasaki, the principle is no doubt the same but them shims were about the size of an old penny these are probably smaller
If its a shim it sounds like its come out and is rattling round or cracked and some of it is anyway but as i say i`m using what i know about old jap 4 strokes as a comparison so could be well wrong
Could do with a manual or at least a reasonably complex diagram of the engine but i cant find anything suitable
Dunno about the oil I`m gonna change it tomorrow, only had it maybe a fortnight, yeah i know i should of done it sooner, its a time or lack of it thing

Sounds like there's something rattling around in there!

              Is the exhaust smokey?

Sorry, I've mis-placed my 'Foreign objects found inside a Surf's valve cover that could cause a rattling sound' list.

                          The "Thing"

Right, so i`ve been outside with the torch, looks pretty straightforward except i`ve got no tools besides a few bed spanners and a hammer but its about time i re supplied my sadly lacking tool box anyway
There is one thing that seems to be stopping it from being a straightforward operation henceforth or untill someone educates me i`ll refer to it as the "thing"
It goes across the rocker cover, made of alloy, presumably hollow and has what i assume to be the throttle cable other thing at the end of it
Is removing this "thing going to cause me any problems or surprises and am i going to need any gaskets etc besides the rocker cover gasket that i`m no way going to find round here on a sunday anyway
Yeah go on give me some stick but i aint got a manual and the last time i done some maintenance on a car it was fred flintstone`s

It's just a hollow inlet tube, nothing special. It goes from the turbo to the throttle body.
You might be able to get a gasket from Halfords, I think it's the same valve cover as the pick-ups. If not, you could use RTV sealant (instant gasket in a tube)
