  • wont start - fuel issue?

About a month ago my car was running fine, then all of a sudden one day I tried to start it and it and it struggled but after a while it did start up. I then drove it about two miles and parked up to do something for about 5mins and when i tried to start it again it just wouldn't start. I have the winter pack (twin batteries) and the engine was turning over fine so I am ruling out power which leaves compression which I must have had for it to run after it was struggling, and fuel. I had dropped an injector spring when changing the head recently so I put it down to this blocking the fuel system and ordered a refurbished set of injecters. I also had a hilux heated fuel primer sitting in my shed so I thought I would change this at the same time. When I took the intake pipe off I noticed that what the manuel calls the 'VSV No.2 for intake constrictor control' is broken, can some one shed light on what this does? Now I have the fuel primer changed I can not get the primer to pump fuel in to the filter. I tried sucking fuel from the pipe and I can do this. I have also tried priming with the fuel cap off, still no joy. I have also filled the filter with diesel but when I turn the enginge ove I am getting no fuel at the injector pipes. Do I have a knackered primer, or pump or is there a electronic control on the fuel system or maybe a split in a fuel line? Any ideas are welcome. Cheers

    it restricts the intake...

When you turn the engine off, the flap shuts off air to the motor, so it dosen't run out of diesel to stop, and then take awhile to start next time.

It also makes a vacuum for the EGR to work.

If its stuck shut then the motor will struggle to start.

Its more likely to be the Spill control valve, on the back of the pump, this regulates the fuel going ot the injectors, so check there is power with there ignition on (3 to 5 volts), of not then its ECU or TPS issues, if power then usually the valve is stuck or burnt out.

If you remove the valve then you can pump the primer and prove you're getting fuel all the way to the valve, its the last bit before injector pipes.

Do the fault codes first, it might give you a clue.

Cheers Tony is the Spill control valve the bottom right connector in the attached photo?

nah, thats the fuel temp sensor, there is a small filter behind it though that can get blocked. The Spill control valve is on the TOP right, the big round thing with black cable.

Ok I have a day off at last so I am having a look now. There is only 0.009 volts going to the spill control valve. The batteries are low on power so I connected a 40ah power pack and it was still the same. I am trying to do the fault codes now, I notice that when I turn the ignition on the check engine light does not illuminate even with the inital check sequence. So I am unable to check the code. I know the check engine light used to work. So this is all pointing at a knackered ECU I am thinking, from your previous advice. Do you think I am on the right track? Cheers

              To TonyN

Hi, reading back through threads, I find this one. You say "there should be 3-5volts going to the cut-off solenoid with the ignition on". Is this correct??, as I have 9 point s/thing going to mine!!. Many thanks for reading this. arh.

sorry, Ithought that I had updated. The problem turned out to be the ecu!!
Sent mine off to "the ecu doctor", been fine ever since, my advice ( for what its worth) is to get the ecu checked out before you start ripping the engine to bits!!!

As I have an injector specialist local to me I'm going to give that a go first, if it's still a non starter after he's looked at the unit then I guess I'll send the ECU off for testing and possible repair.

                    Thanks for reply

                      Fuel Spill Valve

my 3rd gen recently stalled twice for no apparent reason as it started again with out any problem. The third time it stalled however it wouldn't restart due to there being no diesel at the injectors. After a lot of head scratching the fuel spill valve was knackered and not opening to allow fuel through so a quick purchase from Roughtrax 4x4 and all is now sorted. There was 10.6V to it confirmed by placing a meter on the live supply and then to earth. When the ignition was on it would click as though opening but when turned off there was no click heard. I borrowed one off my mates Surf and mine started with out a problem.
Hope this helps others with a similar fault.

                        Sorry to hijack this thread...

I've just bought a '95 3.0td Surf as a non runner. The previous owner had put 12v to the spill valve but he thought it was overfuelling. Am I right in saying the voltage to that will change depending on engine load? Also, does anyone know if the spill valve from a 2.4 will fit? Because I have a dead 2.4 pump to #######ise for parts should I need to. Any help greatly appreciated!
