  • Water Pump replacement for non-mechanics?

My water pump has gone belly up and is weeing out coolant. As I am skint, I was contemplating replacing it myself, the only problem is that I am a mechanical retard and the idea of going anywhere near the timing belt scares me silly.

Is it a do-able job for the uninitiated or am I better off getting the local garage to do it? Are there any special tools required?

What truck? 3.0 is easy, 2.4 is the same amount of effort as doing the cambelt.

If you're skint, then you'll have to do it yourself.

        Do you smoke?

Because people who say they're skint but smoke, are not skint.

Anyhoo, you should be able to fit the pump yourself within a week-end.
Don't forget you'll need a new timing belt too.

replace the timing belt too? hmmm I think that's a garage job, I'm not THAT skint, but I would be if I did it myself and blew the engine.

You don't need to touch the timing belt to replace the 3.0 water pump.

Now that's better news, is there any online guide that shows what needs to be done? I can only find info on the 2.4.

Take the top hose off, the fan shroud, fan and belts, the pump can then be unbolted and swapped.

I've done it outside someones house, tis no biggy.

You'll not need the bottom half of the pump housing you normally get in the box, unless its damaged, then you DO need to remove the cam belt to change this. But if you're just replacing a leaking pump its ok.

Yeah, mine was leaking through the bearing breather. Didn't need to touch the timing belt.

I did mine outside in the street without too much in the way of disasters.

Hot tip! undo the nuts holding the fan on before you slacken any belts. That way you get something to push against. Works the other way round when re fitting. I seem to remember the fan cowl is a bit of a fiddly bugger to remove and re fit but all do able fairly easily.

I was advised to put some red hermatite between all the mating surfaces when re fitting the pump. Don't know if this is really necessary but my mate's been doing this for 20+ years so if he tells me to hold the torque wrench between my bum cheeks I tend to believe him.

I'd fill the thing up with water and run up to temp to check for leaks and then drain again and re fill. Saves on the risk of loosing all that presious anti freeze if you've got something wrong.

                        Well,

I had the waterpump changed, looks like the problem was more serious as there is white smoke coming from the exhaust and the coolant was bubbling in the expansion tank after a drive. The dreaded head problem- truck is now up for sale!
