Very true, there could be a cranking override current for the throttle position sensor, for extra fuel when starting, if you've changed the ECU then change the TPS?

It is something that gets unplugged in doing the head, so wires could have been pulled, but this should give a fault code.

How did you get on with Vinces suggestion?

Another thing springs to mind, there is a earth connection that bolts to the back of the block, right round the back, this gets left off when people swap engines, you don't need to touch it doing the head, but if its been taken off in the past, it might have been bolted back somewhere unusual and been missed putting the truck back together. Its the -ve for all the sensors and fuel pump, and the truck won't start with it not connected. See if you can feel it, or find it, its about 5mm lower than the block deck, facing the gearbox slightly to the passenger side of the block. its just a ring terminal on a couple of black wires.

Thanks for all info Tony, Vince. I'm going to see the sparks tomorrow after work and see if any progress has been made and I'll let them know whats been suggested.

Truck is running sweet now, I'd like to thank all who took the time to read and respond to this thread, hopefully save someone else the same hassle I had.

The wiring is pretty feeble on the main loom in these trucks and getting a bit old on my Surf, so the problem was faulty wiring to the spill control valve, the coolant sensor and the sparks replaced that earth at the back of the block deck because is was very corroded.
No faults showed up on diagnostic so it was down to investigation and advice from people here that narrowed down the problems.

Happy days, time to get muddy!!!!!

Next, new sliders and tube bumpers (yoshie get the welder oot!) and perhaps a subtle change of colour.

I love my big truck, and after fitting the new head I was determined she would breathe again, plenty of life left in her (most bits are new LOL)

Will add my thanks lads, there is little that myself and nugget there fail to get round with a bodge, but this had us beat. Next move was to pull the front half of the loom out and replace, as we were convinced we had damaged something.

Yet again the lads on here prove their worth and depth of knowledge on these cracking trucks. Your suggestions and help kept us at it, Alan now has his big beastie running {thanks to the local sparks help} better than ever and pulling like a train with it's new head.

Now just to get the brakes bled and in for an MOT and he will be back getting it muddy.

It's the only thing I'm not confident at tackling, ###### glad others are though!
