  • Spotted a couple more problems....

I was fitting the new shocks and the uprated torsion bars today and noticed a couple of things that need doing.

One of the inner cv gaiters was split and there's oil leak from around the turbo.

I've cleaned the turbo off - there was so much old oil that it was hard to see where it's coming from, but it's around the oil feed/return area. Once it's back running I'll try and track it down.

Are there any things to watch out for when doing the CV gaiters or any tips?

    Regards

The oil feed/return on the 3ltr are prone to cracking and a real fun job to replace I have heard.

followed this as a guide for removing the front drive shafts. The only extra problems were that the uprated shocks need to be removed as they are wider than standard and I couldnt get the outer CV past it.

      Gaiters should be here tomorrow

        Turbo before jet washing

        Turbo after jet washing

Oil just starting to seep out around the nut for the return pipe

Looks like I'll need a new gasket for the return pipe, that back nut looks a bugger to get to though

          indeed

took me 6-7 hours to replace the pipe assembly -
had to remove the exhuast down-pipe too to access the smaller pipe.

looks like it could be the gasket that has gone on yours,
i had a split on the Concertina metal pipe, so had to replace the whole lot.

Wee tip on the halfshaft removal, knock out one or two of the inner driveflange bolts (they are captivated by splines so easy to put back in) makes it a lot easier to remove the shaft.

Thanks, I had to knock two of them out and then with a little bit of jiggling and twisting it came out fine.

Judging by the type of metal ties on the boots, I would guess that they are the originals.

I've managed to get the oil outlet pipe unbolted from the turbo, without removing the turbo. I used a couple of long extension and an universal joint and a E8 bit and unscrewed the rear stud and nut as one.

There is enough play for me to slip a new gasket in between with having to undo the banjo bolt on the side of the block as that will definately need the turbo or exhaust downpipe removing to access.
