  • Gearbox trouble

Hello everyone, hopefully someone will be able to help me out. I've started having some gearbox trouble today. It's and auto box and when changing up from 1st into 2nd it feels almost like it going to stall, there's a lot of vibration and loss of power. If you put your foot down then in moves up into the rest of gears no problem.

When reducing speed and it changes down from 2nd into 1st there's a terrible amount of vibration and an awful noise, but once it gets into 1st its all fine again.

    It's the same in 2wd and 4wd.

I recently changed the speed sensor to try and get the speedo working but it didn't work. I don't think it's connected to this but just thought it was worth mentioning.

Could this be due to it needing an ATF change or does it sound more terminal?

If anyone can offer advice it would be greatly appreciated, i'm supposed to be going on my first green laning trip next week!

Hi Dan.What condition is the ATF in.Is the level ok aswell. If the fluid is low or and not red in colour then top it up or change it and see if that helps to cure the problem

hi, thankyou. I'm changing the fluid now via the drain plug method. I didn't feel confident enough to remove the hoses and pump it around. Is it worth running the engine and swapping the fluid again as i'd read that you can't change all the fluid this way?

When I changed the speed sensor I had noticed the fluid was brown and did smell faintly burnt and had put it on my 'to do' list. I'm really hoping its just the fluid that needs changing but it sounds like something really serious has happened to it.

the gearboxes are pretty tough going and its the small things that cause the faults like the atf.Once you change the fluid then yea do it again in a week or so

Well, took it for a drive and woo! it's fixed! Amazed that old ATF could have that affect on the gearbox.
Thankyou for the replies, now I just got to sort out this darn speed sensor

Sorry to jump in, but is there a filter that is easily changeable once draining and removing the transmission sump ? Always cured Rangey/Disco transmissions.. Can't seem to see anything readily available on Roughtrax/Milner..
