  • 4Runner 1995 3.0TD Manual M Reg

For the last couple of months it sounded as if I was losing rear grip from dead starts and at the MOT I was advised the rear diff was on the way out. Last Thursday I had a replacement sent down, it was fitted and she behaved much better (not I have to say 100%).On Friday, duly pleased, we loaded up the bikes for a trip from Dorking to Bournemouth. We returned after getting about 20 miles away as she slipped from 2wd into 4wd and there was no way she was going back. In 4wd she pulled like crazy to the right and I had to fight her coming home again. We eventually stopped with smoke pouring out from the underside and what looks like the front diff case boiling hot and seeping oil. Its now in for a reassessment, but what is most likely to have happened ?
Any help gratefully received as always.

I would guess that you have ended up with different ratios on the front and rear diffs, though what caused it to drop into 4wd I dont know. Check the plates on both the old and replacement rear diffs.
