  • Problem with transfer box

After getting stuck in a ditch a guy pulled me out, since then the transfer box is leaking & when I put it into 4 wheel drive there is a terrible noise coming from the front.

The car runs fine in 2 wheel drive can I just leave it like that & never put it into 4x4 again or will that cause more problems in the future.

    Thanks for any help Gary

Its difficult to say without opening it up.
The transfer box provides drive to your rear wheels when in 2 WD and engages the front shaft in 4WD. If its leaking, I wouldn't leave it, or drive it without getting it looked at as soon as possible.

Its unlikely you'll need a new transfer box.
However the cost of swapping a 2nd hand box might be cheaper than repairing it.
What I would do is take it to a reputable transmission specialist and get them to give you a quote. Then ask them how much to swap it with a used one that you can supply.

Then you can decide whether to fix it or break it.

BTW - as you're in Glasgow, I'm not sure but I think Albanach is breaking his 2nd gen. and may have a transfer box.
