Yoshie, having eliminated everything else, I think your wifes rabbit has fallen out of her handbag and rolled under the mat in the drivers footwell!
1) lift out mat
2) Find offending Rabbit
3) switch off and give back to better half
4) Replace mat
Problem solved!
