  • Roof Rack

I want to use my Surf for work. It is a second generation with rear up and down tailgate window that works very well. I can load most things in it just like a van, even managed a triple 8' extension ladder without any problems and still managed to keep window shut. Anyone know what the load bearing of the rear window mechanism is capable of supporting in case I want to use it when transporting long items?

Now, what I really need is a roof rack that will allow me to carry an 8'x4' sheet of ply .... any ideas on how I go about getting one? Anyone got one for sale?

I live in Stoke on Trent .... I travel to SW London in a month or so.

The rear window mechanism isn't load bearing.
Do you know that, with a 50 character limit, it's

If I remember right the window motor has a rubber connection inside it which is designed to come apart if anything gets stuck in it. I think thisis the reasonso many fail because the rubber perishes over time and break. So if you put load on it it might break the motor prematurely.
You could try looking for a roof tray, but it's likely you'll need to make your own mounting blocks to secure it to the roof.

Thanks for replies. Felt a bit of an idiot after I sent in the post and then found the suggested similar links at the bottom of my post! Having looked at them and enjoying the http://www.elphick-pooley.co.uk/htm/...r.htm#roofrack that wiggy sent in (awesome ), I think I'll go look at investing in a couple of Thule roof bars for the longer bits and maybe use a trailer to carry the bigger stuff ........ seems to me it would be more cost effective (I can always sell trailer when finished).

          Thanks again,

          Stewart
