Strange Noise?

Was wondering if any of you guys would be able to shed any light on a strange noise on my Surf:

When warm, after a run & idling a get a strange intermittent what I can only describe as a 'popping' noise. It appears to be coming from the front of the engine compartment and can also be heard through the exhaust at the rear of the vehicle. ( noticed this when putting it in the garage tonight)

The Truck is running like a dream, no cooling issues etc,

I have taken it to my local garage ( a good garage, trusted with a good reputation), he had it for the day, gave it a run etc, could not pinpoint what the noise is (he did not charge me as he could not give me a diagnosis)

The only thing he thought it might be was something 'Flywheel Related', I have the mechanical aptitude of Mr Bean and would appreciate any ideas or advice please.

No its a 3L Auto, L plate.

when you're idling, does it do it when in gear as well as when in N or P?

is it related to RPM, or same noise all the time?

it sounds like it could be an exhaust gasket gone if its making a popping sound.Have the engine running and feel about the joins in the exhaust to see if you can feel anything blowing and also the manifold gasket

Quick Update;

Checked Exhaust, not blowing anywhere,

Still get the noise when in gear,

Semms to be getting worse now, just waiting for something to break!
