  • Grinding Noise

Hi well as title says very loud grinding noise coming from vehicle once i have drivin apporox 6 or 7 miles, it is linked to how fast i am going you can feel it through the car. As you slow down the noise slows down untill you stop, the you can start off again striaght away and it is ok for about 200yards max and the grinding noise comes back.
I did have a problem with my front diff but i have changed it and the O/S/F hub and wheel bearing twice and the noise still comes back. I have checked both propshafts no play to be found, the noise seems to come from the centre of the car "Transmission Tunnel ". I put it in 4 wheel drive and the noise goes but as soon as i go back to 2 wheel drive the grinding starts again.
Had a quick think and looked under again as i thought no "TonyN" hideing under there with his 4" GRINDER. Any one got any suggestions.

like bob said, check the hub bushes first.

take the drive plates off the front hubs and go for a drive if you want to check first, this will stop the front shafts going round.

            Update

Hi well done what TonyN said took both drive plates off drove up to Swinton from Liverpool about 29 miles no bother at all, grease on o/s/f was BLACK and the grease on the n/s/f was white like new. Put drive plate back on n/s/f and drove back home to Liverpool still no problem, so narrowed the original problem down to the o/s/f, will have a look at the week end thanks for the advice both of you.

Hi Bob this is the 1st time in 12years l have had any trouble like this l would not have thought lack of grease in that area would cause such a noise. l have had loads of drive shafts out and had no problem before as i said in last thread thanks for advice. You know the old saying about you cant teach an old dog new tricks, well this old dog has just learned something new.

Regards ROVER sorry i mean Hilux-Bob.

its mostly the people who offroad that and fill it with grit and crap while wading in mud, or overzealous use of the pressure washer.

I've got a similar noise that goes completely when I put the freewheeling hubs in 2x4 mode. Will take a look at my bronze bushes when I get time- meanwhile it's 4x2 freewheeling mode everywhere at the moment as the car is a bit of 'head turner' the amount of noise it makes!

I had the same thing on my Mazda pickup, it was the actuator on the front axle trying to engage (but not fully) the the front hubs, it was an electrical prob, but can also be caused by lack of grease in the hubs...hope you get it sorted soon.
