  • Bad engine vibrations

Our Surf (1993 3.0, 99,000 miles) has developed a rather worrying vibration under certain circumstances. It's by far the worst at about 60mph, when the accelerator is pressed just enough to get the needle to about 2000RPM but not put any force through the gearbox. At that condition, it shakes the whole car pretty badly - accelerate more heavily, or lift your foot off, and it settles right down again.

At that 2000RPM, if I slip it into neutral without changing accelerator position, the engine speed doesn't change; the gearbox is engaged, but no torque is being transmitted through the torque converter. As soon as it goes into neutral, even with the engine speed still up, the vibrations die down.

I've checked the ATF (it was low, but have topped it up and it's still happening). My friend's suggested, and it sounds logical, that the engine mounts might need replacing. I've fitted a snorkel recently too, and wondered if the air intake might be involved, but at that speed/power there should be no issues getting air in, and it works at much higher power without an issue.

What do people think? Has anyone else seen similar symptoms?

give the rear prop a thorough checking over as it sounds much like the uj's on it are on the way out

agreed, uj's are probably giving transmission vibration.

easy fix if that is the problem.
      Roughtrax about £15 each.

Pretty easy. although most garages will do it cheaply enough if you remove prop.
Make sure to line up the prop the way it came off, probably has paint marks along the different parts of it.
Make sure you fit uj with grease nipple on correct side so you can get into grease it.

Front UJ is knackered, well diagnosed. Have ordered spares from Roughtrax and started the WD40 treatment.

Looks like the jaws on the actual shafts have been rubbing, which would explain the bad vibrations. If I end up needing to replace the prop shaft, does anyone know if it's the same one as on the hilux pickup? In NI there's many more of them than surfs in the breakers yards.

Richard, how much for the front section, from the spline forward? The rest is fine, and that'd reduce postage significantly. Definitely going to need it, the sooner the better! We're front wheel drive for now...

Hiya.I don't really like to split the prop shaft as the remainder will end up being dumped as the props are sold as a complete unit

Fair enough, I'd be happy to pay for the whole lot then, would postage be a lot less for just the front section?

Also, is it a bad idea just to replace the front section? My thoughts were that the main chunk, which holds the balance weights, is probably the important bit - if I can keep the original, and just replace the smaller front section, I'm likely to have less vibration problems?

Truck is only insured for another week, so if possible I'd like the bits asap!

Grand, so £64 all in? Any chance of getting it away today? Give me your paypal address and I'll get the money straight in. Could you hold onto the back section for me just now, till I check that this'll sort the problem?
