  • Poor MPG

My 3.0 ltr is only giving me about 17 to 19 MPG even though I drive it really gently. I keep it regularly serviced but I havnt changed the auto transmission oil for some time. It looks OK and doesnt smell burnt. But could this cause my poor MPG? If not, what could it be? I keep the tyres inflated on the hard side. I have never looked at valve clearances, does anyone know if they are hydraulic or shimmed? If they are shimmed, how often should they be checked?

when did you last run some fuel system cleaner through? could be a dirty air filter. are the tyres in good condition?

Duh, sort of thing you would normaly check before buying
            Nissan Patrol for on-road, and a Land-Rover 110 shed for off-road :-)

Yea the recommended towing capacity of a KZN185 is 2500Kg (with trailer brakes) and your Rangies GVW is around 3100Kgs not including trailer. You'de be better of with a Land Cruiser

I've just run a couple of injector cleaners through and then a full tank of fuel. I'm still only getting 17 mpg!

Tyres are ATs and in good condition (but not new).

What should I expect to get MPG wise?

I'd be expecting at least 25mpg if you driving normally and sticking to motorway speed limits, sometimes more if its not used round town lots.

20's and under we normaly only get then towing, or just backwards a forwards round town.

I just wanted to know if there was anything else I could do to get better MPG. Im sure it used to do more than 17 MPG.

                    Tyres are good
                    New airfilter
                    New fuel filter
                    Injector cleaner used regularly
Oil and filter changed every 5000

Have not changed auto trans for a long time
                    Have never checked valve clearances

                    Any ideas?

Thats what i get, a shade under 25 mpg normally, I tow a large caravan and I'm down to 17 then.
Could it be brake bind or overdrive not being engaged?

I would be checking brakes as previously stated by Zolton, the power and mpg changed dramaticly when I put new discs and pads on my truck,

                            check the brakes arent dragging
jack each wheel up and turn by hand to see how easily they turn

i recently serviced all the brakes on my landcruiser colorado (KZN-1TE engine too),
                            3 wheels were dragging badly
i dismantled pistons, cleaned them up and fitted new seals, a job i wont do again in a hurry and would pay for rebursbished units next time

mpg had dropped down to 21-22mpg
i also replaced the fuel and air filter even though they were 7months old

                            mpg back upto 25mpg

I filled up right to the top with diesel. Zeroed mileage counter

Due to the cold weather and snow I recently bought L-reg surf (KZN130). It takes a few turns in the cold to start, but it hasn't let me down. All the readings on them little dials say that everything appears to be in order so I pottered about up and down the snow and ice covered country lanes round Bidulph and l with some trepidation I went back to the garage.

                              287 miles ...... 54.5L

Now assuming 4.5L to the gallon, I make that a thirst quenching 24mpg. I am very very pleased with my Surf ....
